The Inside Sales Associate is a key member of the Barry County Lumber team, responsible for delivering an exceptional in-store experience and helping customers find the right products for their projects. This role is customer-facing and directly reflects our brand — through product knowledge, proactive communication, and a genuine commitment to making every visit count.
Principle Accountabilities
Customer Service & Sales
· Assist customers in person and by phone with courtesy, urgency, and product expertise.
· Proactively engage customers who may need guidance, product advice, or project recommendations.
· Compute and quote small estimates for customers that do not require a blueprint takeoff.
· Facilitate special orders, ensuring accurate processing and timely follow-through with customers.
· Perform special services such as key cutting, merchandise demonstrations, and other customer-specific requests.
· Handle customer complaints promptly and professionally; escalate to management when needed.
Store Operations & Inventory
· Assist with stocking, merchandising, and maintaining a well-organized sales floor.
· Monitor inventory levels and advise management of shortages to maintain proper stock.
· Monitor for shoplifting and respond in accordance with company policy.
· Maintain accuracy in all transactions including cash, credit, and check handling.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· 2+ years of experience in sales or customer service
· Knowledge of construction materials and products
· Familiarity with local building codes
· Strong computer skills; ability to learn multiple software platforms
· Experience with point-of-sale systems and cash handling procedures
· Strong attention to detail in recording transactions
Working Conditions:
· 90%+ climate-controlled retail environment
· Requires standing for extended periods; bending, reaching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs
