General Purpose
The Preschool Program Nurse ensures the care of the whole child by addressing the direct medical, emotional and physical needs of the students in all the preschool centers and manages and coordinates the assigned schools’ health services plan based on requirements established by school policies and procedures and by local, state and national regulations and statutes. The Preschool Program Nurse oversees the preschool program with regard to direct student medical care, coordinating with the preschool teachers for scheduling, developing and communicating the medical and emergency health plans.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Nursing degree (preferred) from an accredited nursing program.
- Licensed registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
- CPR certified.
- Three years nursing experience, including one year in a long-term care facility, and/or one year experience with pediatric home health.
- Able to use clinic/medical equipment.
- Possess basic pharmacological knowledge.
- Able to assess emergency situations and act accordingly.
- Knowledge of universal precautions/procedures.
- Self-sufficient and require a minimum of supervision or assistance in performing job duties.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to work as a member of a team and contribute to the agency vision and goals.
- Able to demonstrate confidentiality in all matters.
- Positive leadership skills.
- Must complete and pass required criminal history check.
Essential Duties (shall include, but are not limited to the following):
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Ensure compliance with procedures and protocols.
- Provide nursing care and physical screening to students; assess students and implement first aid measures for students in the SXI classroom as needed.
- Implement and record required screening programs; notify parents when further medical evaluation is indicated.
- Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications for all center-based students,
- Perform nursing care procedures prescribed by the students’ physician in the centers.
- Provide training to building staff to ensure medications are properly distributed to students.
- Initiate procedures for students in the building for respiratory and circulatory emergencies.
- Initiate procedures for students in the building for seizure emergencies.
- Develop Individual Health Care Plans for students on a case-by-case basis.
- Teach specific medical procedures for the evaluation and maintenance of the medically involved student in the classroom.
- Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
- Maintain equipment and assess the need for consumable supplies on an annual basis.
- Manage the process for third party billing with Medicaid to obtain reimbursement for skilled nursing care.
- Consult/participated with, as needed, in the health curriculum program.
- Support the maintenance of up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention.
- Assist in daily classroom routines (i.e., dressing, toileting) and facilitate student participation.
- Is directly responsible for the immediate medical attention of students and care for the students' physical needs (changing clothes, feeding, lifting, tube feeding, suctioning, catheterization, etc.)
- Predictable/reliable attendance.
Other Duties
- Act as a resource, if needed, to employees, students and the general public and visitors to the NC RESA.
- Possess knowledge of NC RESA’s organization, mission, and philosophy.
- Perform other duties deemed appropriate by the Supervisor of Center-Based Programs.
