Summary
Under the general supervision of the supervisor on duty the employee drives motorized bus equipment in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner in transporting passengers; receives and transmits communications within the Dial-A-Ride system; completes necessary records and reports; and performs related work as required. This system operates seven days a week and the actual duty assignments will be determined by supervision.
Job Responsibilities
Drives motorized bus equipment on highway picking up and delivering passengers; ensures that passengers deposit appropriate fares; directs passengers; issues; receives; and punches transfers; announces streets and stopping destinations; adjusts route and destination signs as necessary; assists disabled passengers in boarding and leaving vehicle; inspects and tests equipment before each run and performs general servicing on vehicle such as filling with gas; checking oil; battery; radiator; lights; cleaning floor; windows; etc.; removes ice; snow; or slush and mud from steps or platform as necessary; responsible for keeping vehicle properly lighted; heated; ventilated; and cleaned both inside and out and reports needed repairs to supervisor; keeps necessary records and reports; following standard procedures coordinates emergency repairs on vehicles by contacting appropriate agency (i.e. Public Works; automobile dealership; etc.); during accidents and emergencies contacts appropriate agency (i.e. Police and Dial-A-Ride) service as required; holds vehicles to their scheduled leave time and sees that vehicles are spaced in accordance with the schedule; and performs related duties as required.
Experience and Training
Graduation from high school or the General Educational Development (GED) equivalency.
Thorough knowledge of City and surrounding area streets and activity locations; knowledge of regulations governing; and ability to operate a two-way radio; knowledge of general traffic laws and regulations including those relating to buses and public transportation; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to deal with the public pleasantly and effectively; some mechanical aptitude; physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job.
Necessary Special Qualifications
Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license with a good driving record.
Additional Requirement
If hired; the employee will be need to obtain a Class C Commercial Driver’s License with P Endorsement. The City will provide on the job training required for this license.
