Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Journeyman Tool and Die Maker to join our precision job shop team. Individuals will be responsible for building, altering, maintaining and repairing complex, high precision single station, progressive and compoud stamping dies. This position requires an expert-level understanding of tight-tolerance manufacturing (0.0001"to0.0002"), excellent troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, low volume/high mix job shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Build & Assemble: Read and interpret complex blueprints, and engineering sketches to build new progressive, compound, and draw dies from scratch.
- Tight Tolerance Machining: Set up and operate manual toolroom machinery (surface grinders, jig grinders, Bridgeport mills, engine lathes) to fabricate die components to exact specifications often holding tolerances as tight as 0.0001".
- Maintenance & Repair: Sharpen, repair, and modify existing production tooling to minimize downtime and ensure continuous part quality.
- Forming & Stamping Expertise: Work closely with press operators during die set-ups and trial runs to visually inspect first-article parts and make critical timing or clearance adjustments.
- Quality Checks: Inspect your work using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, optical comparators, and height gauges) to verify dimensional accuracy before assembly.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or GED. Minimum five years of experience or more as a Journeyman in a high precision job shop environment.
- Certification: Completed a formal apprenticeship program with a recognized Journeyman Tool and Die Maker License.
- Precision Stamping Focus: Proven track record working with small, intricate and high precision metal stampings (i.e., connectors, electronics, medical components or precision automotive hardware).
Technical Proficiency & Skills
- Performance at expert level of manual surface grinding skills (including wet grinding, form dressing and radius dressing).
- Strong working knowledge of die steels (D2, CPM, Carbide, etc.) and proper heat-treat characteristics.
- Deep understanding of progressive die stripping, component timing, clearances and spring/nitrogen cylinder physics.
- Mathematical Skills: Advanced shop math, including trigonometry and geometry, for complex layouts and machining calculations.
- Mindset: Self-motivated with a high degree of craftsmanship, problem solving ingenuity and the ability to pivot between different projects seamlessly.
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
- Ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods of time.
- Follows all safety procedures including wearing proper PPE.
Position Type/Hours of Work: This is a full-time position with benefits. Hours of work are Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30p and Saturdays (if needed) 6:00am-11:00am.
