EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
The Equipment Operator is responsible for operating construction equipment or performing any physical labor required to install underground cable. This can include unloading and loading equipment, digging holes, and locating existing utilities, preparing cable routes, feeding cable, securing the job site, and placing signs where directed. The Equipment Operator is also responsible for performing shore, slop trench, and excavation when necessary, or other duties assigned by the Foreman.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operate various equipment in placing cable and conduit (backhoe, mini-excavator, trencher, bore rig, plow).
- Perform shoring, slope trenching or excavation when necessary.
- Identify various soil types.
- Work around located utilities.
- Expose existing utilities by hand-digging.
- Read prints for cable placement and consult with foreman regarding different approaches to job.
- Report equipment problems to Foreman.
- Communicate with foreman any current or unforeseen problems experienced on the job.
- Communicate and know the progress and expectations of the job.
- Assist in training Laborers in all phases of utility construction.
- Prepare cable route.
- Feed cable.
- Set up pedestals.
- Drive ground rods.
- Compact trench lines.
- Train on equipment operation and print reading.
- Load and unload work supplies.
- Place signs, cones, and barricades when necessary.
- Secure job site and equipment at the end of the day.
- Perform daily equipment maintenance (greasing equipment, checking oil, hydraulic fluid, and fueling).
- Transport heavy equipment (if employee holds a valid CDL).
- Clean vehicles and equipment.
- Complete and supervise job site restoration.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
A) Must be able to read.
B) Must be able to work with and around people and alone at times.
C) Must be able to comprehend and perform the responsibilities of the position.
D) Must be able to communicate competently.
QUALIFICATIONS
A) Hold an insurance-acceptable driver’s license.
B) One to two years’ experience in utility construction
C) Able to perform hard physical labor.
D) Hold a Class A CDL or be able to obtain one.
E) Must be at least 18 years of age.
F) Read CATV and/or telephone prints.
