BUYER / SENIOR BUYER

Position Type: Full-Time, Regular (12-Month)
Salary: $55,000–$70,000 annually
Position Summary
Central Michigan University is seeking a Buyer/Senior Buyer to manage the procurement of complex goods and services supporting university operations. This position is responsible for purchasing, contract administration, vendor management, financial analysis, and ensuring compliance with university purchasing policies. Senior Buyer responsibilities include providing departmental leadership, mentoring staff, and serving as a subject matter expert on procurement systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Manage purchasing activities for assigned commodities and services.
Prepare bids, evaluate proposals, negotiate contracts, and issue purchase orders.
Develop and maintain relationships with campus departments and vendors.
Conduct financial analysis to support purchasing decisions.
Monitor vendor performance and ensure purchasing compliance.
Draft and administer contracts and major purchasing agreements.
Coordinate product testing, purchasing procedures, and departmental training.
Expedite orders and resolve purchasing issues.
Senior Buyer: Provide leadership, mentor staff, support hiring and training, serve as procurement subject matter expert, and assist with purchasing system improvements.
Required Qualifications
Buyer
Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in business or related field.
One year of purchasing or related experience.
Strong analytical, financial, organizational, and communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Senior Buyer
Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
Three or more years of purchasing or related experience.
Experience with vendor management, negotiations, and contract administration.
Strong analytical, leadership, and organizational skills.
Attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree or continued professional development.
Purchasing certification (CPP, CPSM, or similar).
Experience with ERP/MRP systems.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Additional hours as needed.
