Position Summary
Diversco Construction Company is hiring Construction Laborers to join our underground utility, road construction, and site work crews across greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan. This is an entry point into the civil construction trade for dependable, hardworking people who want to build a career.
Laborers work shoulder to shoulder with our operators and pipe crews on sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, and road construction/reconstruction projects, learning the trade from experienced crews and growing into pipelayer and operator roles over time.
This is a full-time, hourly position with daily travel to active job sites, reporting to our Byron Center yard and Grand Rapids office as needed. Work is performed primarily in urban and tight-access environments, often within active rights-of-way, where reliability, hustle, and professionalism matter as much as skill.
Work Location & Schedule
- Reports to active job sites daily; also reports to the Byron Center yard and Grand Rapids office as needed
- Service area: greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan
- Schedule: 10-hour days, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work as job demands require
- Daily round-trip; overnight travel is not anticipated
Responsibilities
General Site Labor & Crew Support:
- Support the crew with hand digging, trenching, pipe bedding, backfill, and compaction around utility installations
- Load, unload, move, and stage pipe, structures, materials, and tools by hand and with equipment as directed
- Assist operators by spotting, checking grade, and helping position equipment safely around open excavations
- Keep the work area, yard, and job site clean, organized, and safe
Underground Utility & Pipe Work:
- Work in and around open trenches installing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and watermain
- Assist with setting and joining pipe, checking line and grade off a pipe laser, and setting structures such as manholes, catch basins, and hydrants, learning these skills alongside experienced crew
- Set and pull trench boxes and shoring under the direction of the foreman
- Perform saw cutting, hand compaction, and surface restoration as directed
Traffic Control & Urban Site Work:
- Set up, maintain, and take down work-zone traffic control, and flag traffic to protect the crew and the public
- Work safely and courteously around active traffic, pedestrians, adjacent property, and existing utilities in urban environments
- Identify and respect MISS DIG locate markings; communicate immediately with the foreman if unmarked utilities are suspected or encountered
Tools & Small Equipment:
- Operate hand and power tools, plate compactors, jumping jacks, cut-off saws, pumps, and other small equipment safely and as directed
- Cross-train on skid steers, mini excavators, and other equipment as skills develop, building toward an operator seat over time
- Perform basic daily checks and care on assigned tools and small equipment; report damage or issues promptly
Safety & Team Support:
- Follow all OSHA and Diversco safety protocols, including trench and excavation safety and traffic control procedures
- Work in and around trenches and confined spaces, receiving confined space, trench safety, and other training as needed/required
- Wear required PPE at all times on the job site
- Communicate professionally with the foreman, fellow crew members, customers, inspectors, and the public
- Support the broader operations team during weather days, slow periods, or as otherwise assigned
