CNC Lathe & Mill Operator — Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a skilled CNC Lathe & Mill Operator to set up, operate, and maintain CNC
machining equipment to produce precision components. This role requires strong
technical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret engineering drawings and
machining instructions.
Key Responsibilities
• CNC Machine Setup — Install tooling, set work offsets, load programs, and
prepare CNC lathes and mills for production.
• Program Execution — Run CNC programs, monitor toolpaths, and make necessary
adjustments to ensure part accuracy.
• Lathe & Mill Operation — Perform turning, milling, drilling, tapping, boring, and
threading operations on various materials.
• Blueprint Interpretation — Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and
work instructions.
• Precision Measurement — Use micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators to
verify tolerances.
• Tooling Adjustments — Adjust tool wear offsets, replace inserts, and troubleshoot
cutting issues.
• Quality Control — Inspect parts during and after machining, document results, and
ensure compliance with specifications.
• Machine Maintenance — Perform routine cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs
to maintain machine performance.
• Safety Compliance — Follow all safety protocols, including PPE, lockout/tagout,
and safe material handling.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• CNC Machining Experience — 2–5 years operating CNC lathes and mills.
• G-Code Knowledge — Ability to understand and make edits to G-code and M-code.
• Blueprint Reading — Strong understanding of GD&T and machining symbols.
• Shop Math — Proficiency with decimals, fractions, trigonometry, and right-triangle
calculations.
• Tooling Knowledge — Familiarity with inserts, toolholders, speeds/feeds, and
material behavior.
• Problem Solving — Ability to diagnose chatter, tool wear, tolerance drift, and finish
issues.
Preferred Qualifications
• Multi-Axis Machining — Experience with 4-axis or 5-axis equipment.
• Material Expertise — Ability to machine stainless, tool steels, aluminum, and
exotic alloys.
Physical Requirements
• Lift up to 40–50 lbs
• Stand for extended periods
• Manual dexterity and steady hand-eye coordination
• Comfortable working around oils, coolants, and industrial equipment
Work Environment
• Fast-paced production and prototype machining
• Mix of CNC lathe and mill work
