SUMMARY
To provide the highest quality classroom instruction for students with disabilities whose needs can best be met in a structured Educational Service District classroom program. The teacher is responsible for planning and implementing the Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) with team input, progress reports, classroom observation records, and other required documentation.
- Provides a basic core program for students, including curriculum, lessons, and special education programming and teaching methods. Maintains attendance and evaluation records for classroom students.
- Evaluates students’ progress based on work output and observation, and determines goals and objectives.
- Exemplifies effective and research-based teaching strategies, methods, and practices that enhance the students’ learning environment.
- Works collaboratively with fellow teachers, ancillary staff, parent/guardians, agency personnel, transportation, and supervisors.
- Plans Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) designed to meet students’ needs and state and federal laws.
- Establishes a structured classroom to ensure the safety of each student.
- Leads and provides direct oversight of classroom paraprofessionals
- Maintains professional, positive, and productive relationships with the students’ parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Refers students for observation to members of the support staff, which included Speech Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, School Psychologists, and School Social Workers, when appropriate and necessary.
- Participates in the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) evaluation, the development and implementation of Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and committee/staff meetings held in relation to program operation.
- Effectively manages students’ health, personal care, and safety, including health care plans.
- Completes Medicaid and other paperwork as appropriate.
EDUCATION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Valid Teaching certificate with special education endorsement in SA for cognitive impairment or the ability to obtain temporary approval or permit while working on meeting requirements.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Presence on the job is an employee’s fundamental obligation.
- Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
BENEFITS/WORKING CONDITIONS: 184-day school-year contract with competitive pay and benefits as outlined in the West Shore Education Association Agreement.
