ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER

Position Summary:
The Assistant Athletic Trainer is a certified and licensed healthcare professional responsible for delivering comprehensive athletic training services to Central Michigan University (CMU ) intercollegiate student- athletes. This position provides daily medical care for assigned teams, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation. The Assistant Athletic Trainer travels with teams to competitions, attends home events and practices, and plays an integral role within the collaborative Sports Medicine healthcare team.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited institution.
Certification as an Athletic Trainer in good standing with the National Athletic Trainer Association Board of Certification (NATABOC ).
Current licensure, as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Michigan, or eligibility for licensure upon hire.
Current CPR /AED certification for the healthcare provider or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively with student-athletes, coaches, and healthcare professionals.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities.
Willingness and availability to travel and work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, or a closely related field.
Two years of full-time experience as a certified athletic trainer, preferably in a collegiate or professional sports setting.
Experience working with NCAA Division I student-athletes.
Advanced certifications such as Graston Technique, Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM ), Active Release Techniques (ART ), Certified
Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS ), Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES ), or Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES ).
Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR ) and injury tracking software (e.g., ATS , Healthy Roster, SportsWare).
Experience supervising or mentoring athletic training students, graduate assistants, or interns.
Proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Knowledge of NCAA and conference rules related to student-athlete health and wellness.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Athletic Training & Student-Athlete Care:
Serves as the Certified Athletic Trainer for assigned intercollegiate athletic team(s).
Provides comprehensive athletic training services, including the prevention, evaluation, treatment, referral, and rehabilitation of orthopedic and non-orthopedic injuries.
Develops and manages individualized rehabilitation programs for both surgical and non-surgical cases.
Facilitates outside medical referrals and assists with in-house physician and orthopedic clinics.
Maintains accurate and timely medical records using the electronic injury tracking system, documenting treatments, progress notes, diagnostic imaging, and physician interactions.
Assists in the collection and organization of external medical documentation and communicates medical referrals to the insurance coordinator.
Serves as the primary liaison to the insurance coordinator for assigned student-athletes.
Collaboration & Communication:
Works under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and in consultation with the CMU Athletics Medical Director.
Communicates regularly with coaching staff and strength & conditioning personnel regarding the health status and care plans of student- athletes.
Coordinates with CMU Student-Athlete Services to address academic conflicts and ensure continuity of care for student-athletes with medical needs.
Collaborates with the strength and conditioning team to develop alternate or modified workout plans for injured student-athletes.
Acts as a liaison and point of contact for assigned student-athletes with CMU Athletics’ dedicated mental health care team and student- athlete counselor.
Communicates with the necessary athletic department staff to provide updates on injury status, limitations, and accommodations.
Participates in departmental meetings, continuing education, and professional development.
