Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Scientist performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory testing on patient specimens following established standards and practices. This role involves analyzing test results, preparing samples, and applying expertise in laboratory science principles and clinical significance daily.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Perform laboratory testing according to established procedures and departmental policies
Accurately record and enter test results into laboratory systems
Identify and communicate abnormal, critical, or unexpected results promptly
Compare current and historical patient results to identify trends or discrepancies
Conduct quality control procedures and maintain/calibrate laboratory equipment
Troubleshoot and report issues such as specimen integrity concerns, equipment malfunctions, or QC variances
Prepare reagents, standards, and materials used in testing
Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing units, and clients regarding test results and clarifications
Participate in department meetings, quality assurance programs, and continuing education
Assist in the training and development of laboratory staff and team members
Assume Tech-in-Charge responsibilities when assigned
Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information
Promote a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols and reporting hazards
Required Education, Experience & Certification
Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from an accredited institution
Experience: Previous experience in a medical laboratory setting preferred
Certification (Preferred):
Medical Technologist (MT)
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS - ASCP)
Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or equivalent certification (e.g., NCLS)
