Description
Central Michigan University is seeking a Care Advocate to provide case management support for students experiencing challenges related to personal well-being, safety concerns, basic needs, mental health, and academic success. The position works closely with campus partners to connect students with resources, provide crisis support, and promote student well-being through intervention, outreach, and prevention efforts.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage referrals involving students experiencing distress or other challenges
• Assess and triage students in crisis and connect them with appropriate resources
• Conduct outreach and follow-up with students through various communication methods
• Assist students in accessing counseling, mental health, medical, academic, and basic-needs resources
• Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, and campus partners
• Collaborate with parents and supporters regarding available resources and student concerns
• Maintain accurate case records, documentation, and statistical reports
• Participate in department meetings and university-wide prevention initiatives
• Support campus efforts focused on student wellness and mental health
• Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, Public Health, or a related field
• Experience working within a collaborative support team environment
• Ability to assist individuals in navigating complex systems and resources
• Experience with consultation, crisis intervention, and triage approaches
• Strong commitment to confidentiality, ethics, and professional integrity
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
• Strong organizational, administrative, and time-management abilities
• Willingness to participate in committees focused on student mental health and well-being
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with case management and crisis response
• Knowledge of mental health terminology, treatment options, and diagnostic categories
• Training in Mental Health First Aid, QPR, or ASSIST
• Professional licensure or eligibility for licensure in Michigan (social work, counseling, etc.)
• Experience using case management software such as Advocate
Work Schedule
• Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
• Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities as needed
• Academic-year appointment (9 months)
