SUMMARY
Teacher Consultants are highly skilled staff in various disability areas who provide leadership around student-focused outcomes. The WSESD Teacher Consultants’ priority is to provide the highest quality instruction, consultation, and professional learning opportunities for students, parents, and staff, all within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Functions as a liaison between local schools, the ESD, and/or the state, and promotes ambassadorship of the WSESD Board of Education’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Goals, and Strategic Plan Priorities.
- Provides direct services, indirect services (i.e., consultation), and could be a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team (MET) within the IDEA regulations, MARSE rules, and ESD guidelines for those identified students.
- Reviews, explains, and makes recommendations to the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP)/ Individualized Education Program (IEP) team regarding reports from outside medical professionals, if needed.
- Attends meetings related to MTSS, specialized ESD committees/activities within the service milieu, special education referral processes, METs, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), child/student study teams, Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) development for students with a disability.
- Consults/collaborates with parents, school staff, ESD colleagues, and agencies regarding educational matters while utilizing teacher consultant principles.
- Consults on appropriate accommodations to students with an IEP for assessment purposes.
- Works in collaboration with the special education and general education departments.
- Conducts professional learning opportunities for educators regarding disability, social, and communication strategies. Keeps abreast of field developments via professional learning opportunities, workshops/ conferences, and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) as related to the WSESD’s Mission, Vision, Goals, and Strategic Plan Priorities.
- Engages in and promotes confidentiality, maintains professional, positive relationships and communication with students, parents, educators, administrators, and co-workers.
- Promotes parental education/participation and may participate in home visitations and parent-teacher conferences for child-find purposes, and may be involved with medical appointments with families for education planning.
EDUCATION/SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
- Three years of satisfactory teaching experience, two of which shall be in a special education classroom.
- Teacher consultant approval from the Michigan Department of Education.
- Endorsement for VI on Teacher Certification
- Valid MI teaching license; Teacher consultant approval from the Michigan Department of Education; Valid driver’s license.
- Presence on the job is an employee’s fundamental obligation.
- Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
BENEFITS/WORKING CONDITIONS: 184-day school-year contract with competitive pay and benefits as outlined in the West Shore Education Association Agreement.
