Advanced Emissions Calibration Engineer - Gasoline & Hybrid Powertrain Systems
Overview / Summary
We are seeking an experienced Advanced Emissions Calibration Engineer to support the development and validation of emissions calibration strategies for gasoline-powered Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) applications.
This role focuses on achieving future emissions compliance targets while balancing fuel economy, vehicle performance, and drivability. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in powertrain calibration, emissions systems, testing environments, data analysis, and prototype system validation.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and validate emissions calibration strategies for gasoline, HEV, and PHEV propulsion systems
Support system-level development to meet future emissions compliance standards including SULEV20, SULEV15, and SULEV10
Conduct testing across engine dynamometers, powertrain/hub dynamometers, and vehicle platforms
Utilize virtual simulation and analytical tools to support calibration development and system capability validation
Perform sensitivity studies to balance emissions compliance, fuel economy, performance, and drivability
Coordinate calibration activities across engine, aftertreatment, transmission, and electrified propulsion subsystems
Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE) methods for calibration and operating strategy development
Lead prototype system setup, commissioning, debugging, and troubleshooting activities
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software integration issues in prototype environments
Analyze large-scale datasets to identify trends and support statistical validation activities
Prepare and present technical reports, calibration progress updates, and compliance status to leadership and cross-functional teams
Manage project timelines, test resources, parts procurement, and status reporting activities
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related technical field
5+ years of experience in powertrain calibration with focus on gasoline emissions and/or electrified propulsion systems
Strong understanding of gasoline engine emissions systems and exhaust aftertreatment technologies
Experience with HEV and/or PHEV propulsion systems
Proficiency with calibration tools such as ATI Vision, ETAS INCA, or Vector CANape
Experience with CAN communication protocols
Knowledge of global emissions regulations and test procedures including SULEV20, SULEV15, and SULEV10 standards
Hands-on experience with prototype vehicle setup, wiring, and hardware troubleshooting
Experience with DAQ systems and engine/chassis dynamometer testing environments
Strong data analysis and statistical validation experience using large datasets
Understanding of vehicle electrical systems, control systems, and powertrain integration
Experience using MATLAB, Python, or equivalent tools for data processing and modeling
Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies
Strong communication, project management, and technical reporting skills
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD in Engineering or related field
Experience with exhaust aftertreatment system design and validation
Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and DOE optimization tools
Experience developing hybrid energy management strategies and start/stop emissions control
Understanding of environmental compliance and evolving emissions regulations
Experience leading technical reviews and mentoring junior engineers
