A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.
The Division of Pediatric Surgery is recruiting a highly motivated Advanced Practice Professional (APP) to join our team. Our Division is a leader in the Pediatric Surgical Community, setting the standard for teamwork, compassionate care, education, and innovation. We are looking for a qualified APP to join our team with an emphasis on outpatient and peri-operative surgical care, and a particular focus on feeding and nutrition. The APP will function as part of an outpatient multi-disciplinary team with physicians, RNs, MAs, dietitians, fellows, residents, and administrative support staff. The APP will care for patients with a wide range of diagnoses across the spectrum of pediatric surgery and will also be a key member of the Rapid Access Nutrition Clinic along with our multidisciplinary subspecialty clinics (e.g. Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), Thoracic, Pectus Excavatum, and Endocrine).
This APP role includes performing pre-operative consultations, preparing patient histories, performing physical examinations, following laboratory and radiology results, educating patients and families with regards to procedures and peri-operative care, wound checks, directing outpatient care via multiple modalities (phone calls, MiChart communication, etc.) along with performing clinic procedures. Procedures include suction rectal biopsies, appendicostomy/cecostomy/gastric tube exchanges, rectal dilations, rectal washouts, incision and drainage, Broviac catheter repair, seton/vessel loop/drain/chest tube/suture removal, circumcisions, NG tube placement, and bridling of NG tube. The APP will also be involved in medical management of pilonidal disease (with referral to a surgeon when needed). Duties are not limited to the above description, and the APP will become facile with all the above with appropriate training and oversight.
The Subspecialty and Rapid Access Nutrition Clinics involve longitudinal care of patients. The APP will counsel families between visits, provide management as necessary, and facilitate timely access for patients. Additionally, close collaboration with our Pediatric Subspecialists team (e.g. Pediatric Pulmonary, Pediatric Endocrinology, Dietician, etc.) will be an important part of our multi-disciplinary care.
NP
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- Current specialty certification as Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner or Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan
- At least 1 year of clinical APP experience in pediatric ambulatory care
- Current DEA registration required
- AHA approved BLS
PA
- Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
- At least 1 year of clinical APP experience in pediatric ambulatory care
- Current DEA registration required
- AHA approved BLS

- Experience with EMR
- Experience in an ambulatory care setting with a pediatric patient population
- At least 1 year of APP experience in a pediatric surgical service and/or pediatric GI
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills as verified by performance reviews and/or references
- Demonstrated clinical knowledge and analytical abilities necessary to formulate and perform medical/surgical interventions
