This role focuses on mechatronic and electronic hardware design release with a strong emphasis on warranty, quality, and field issue resolution for electronic modules. You will lead product development for electrical modules and a wireless charging system, manage design release activities, and work closely with dealerships, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to resolve quality issues and improve service procedures. The position requires a motivated engineer who can operate independently, manage ambiguity, and provide technical leadership across multiple vehicle programs and electronic control units (ECUs).
Lead the design release and technical project management of electronic modules and a wireless charging system, including definition of requirements, design execution, analysis, development, testing, and validation.
Create and maintain Interface Control Design (ICD) strategy and ICD templates for electronic modules and related components.
Develop and maintain commodity-specific documentation and generate global subsystem/component technical specification templates (SSTS/CTS).
Investigate and resolve warranty and field quality issues by analyzing part returns, reviewing vehicle data, and working directly with dealerships and field personnel.
Answer calls from dealerships, support field issue triage, and address problems arising from current service procedures to reduce unnecessary issues and costs.
Lead the resolution of technical issues by coordinating cross-functional teams and documenting progress in the Problem Resolution Tracking System.
Close the loop on lessons learned by updating best practices, specifications, statements of requirements, templates, and other technical documentation.
Provide technical direction and leadership to a product development team consisting of engineers and engineering support personnel.
Manage supplier timing and deliverables, including coordination of part deliveries to benches, vehicle retrofits, and assembly plants.
Lead and manage supplier resident engineers, ensuring alignment on technical solutions, timing, and quality targets.
Support sourcing activities by contributing to technical evaluations, supplier selection, and cost-benefit analyses.
Generate technical solutions for current, new, and major programs, focusing on control modules, sensors, and hardware/software integration.
Perform complex design and feasibility analyses to ensure robust hardware and software integration within vehicle systems.
Initiate and maintain engineering documentation to provide design authority and ensure math/CAD data is current and accurate.
Work with design, manufacturing engineering, purchasing, quality, supplier technical assistance, plant personnel, and other stakeholders to implement cost reductions, product improvements, and support build programs.
Validate assigned modules and systems, including planning and overseeing test activities and interpreting test results.
Track warranty performance and support supplier root cause investigations to drive corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
Support transition activities when changing suppliers for ECUs by tracking program-specific issues, managing communication to program teams, and assisting in program integration and issue tracking.
Engage in daily client-facing and cross-functional communication to align requirements, manage expectations, and report on project status.
Prepare and present cost-benefit analyses, track performance metrics, and align engineering decisions with financial and timing goals.
Apply advanced engineering principles and theory to mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering problems, ensuring robust technical integration across projects.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Math, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Chemistry.
Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience, with a strong preference for automotive product development involving electrical/electronic component design and release.
Experience with control modules, sensors, and hardware/software integration in electronic modules.
Demonstrated Design Release Engineer (DRE) behaviors, including leadership, clear communication, and project management capabilities.
Background in quality and warranty, including experience resolving warranty issues, working with dealerships, and addressing field issues.
Ability to analyze part returns, identify failure modes, and drive root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Understanding of hardware design and failure modes in electronic modules.
Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, memory technologies, and programming.
Knowledge of vehicle serial data communications and related protocols.
Proficiency in writing and comprehending software and hardware requirements.
Knowledge of software verification and validation processes, including testing methods and tools.
Ability to translate text-based functional requirements into software algorithms and models.
High level of analytical ability to solve unusual and difficult engineering problems.
Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical and electrical mechanisms.
Specific knowledge of engineering mechanics, physics, metallurgy, or manufacturing methods engineering.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, analysis, and reporting.
Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and drive issues to closure without close supervision.
Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and experience working with design, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, and supplier teams.
Demonstrated leadership, motivation, flexibility, initiative, and the ability to influence without direct authority.
Design Release Engineer experience with hardware/software electronic modules or sensors.
Experience as a resident engineer on hardware/software electronic modules or other commodities.
Experience as a technical program manager for hardware/software electronic modules or sensors.
Background in systems, validation, controls, or other product experience related to hardware/software electronic modules or sensors.
Electrical experience, especially the ability to use a scan tool and interpret vehicle data, is highly beneficial.
Electronic validation experience, including planning, executing, and interpreting validation tests.
Software and hardware controls experience, with prior release experience considered a strong plus.
Experience with automated driving sensors such as cameras, lidars, radars, and ultrasonic sensors.
