General Definition of Work
Performs human support work providing basic needs and insuring safety and security of delinquent youth housed in County detention facilities and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of assigned personnel.
Essential Functions
• Responsible for safety, security, environment, and needs of residents during shift. Supervises residents in all activities such as housekeeping, getting ready for school, recreation, during meals, and socialization. Supervises resident’s hygiene and teaches self-care.
• Provides general counseling and assists residents in solving personal problems. Assists residents in getting along with others and learning self-esteem in a detention environment by one on one and group discussions.
• Performs security checks and observes various areas and residents for adherence to rules. May have to break up fights or arguments and physically restrain unruly residents. Escorts residents to and from other areas such as school, nurse, caseworker, psychologist, or lawyer.
• Plans, implements and supervises recreational and social activities for both individual and group in residents' living areas, gym, or outside. Observes residents during recreation; assists in activities and maintains an orderly situation.
• Writes behavior logs, incident reports, informational reports to be passed on to staff, and memos to supervisor.
• Responsible for maintaining clean work area and removing trash.
• Facilitate religious services and visitation days by setting up chairs, TVs, etc.
• Cleans resident rooms if damaged or flooded, sanitizes and cleans bedding and clothing used in the facility by residents, treats residents with lice, scabies, etc.
• May transport youth to hospital, physician, dentist, psychologist, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Moderate (1+ year) experience in juvenile court or child care facility, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
• Obtain CPR & First Aid Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Complete Crisis Prevention Intervention Training upon hire.
• Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan.
