Job Title: Clinical Research Coordinator
Job Description
The Clinical Research Coordinator supports complex drug clinical trials by coordinating patient-facing activities, including recruitment, screening, consent, and study visits. This role works closely with research nurses, data, and regulatory teams to ensure that patients are properly enrolled, monitored, and supported throughout their participation in oncology clinical trials. The position offers significant opportunities for professional growth, structured training, and development within a collaborative cancer research environment.
Responsibilities
Conduct patient-facing clinical research activities, including scheduling and conducting patient visits for assigned clinical trials.
Work directly with research nurses to support patient visits and ensure protocol adherence during study procedures.
Participate in patient recruitment efforts using methods such as referrals, tumor boards, and new consults, in collaboration with the disease-specific team.
Perform detailed chart reviews to identify potential participants and assess inclusion and exclusion criteria for trial eligibility.
Obtain informed consent from patients, ensuring they understand the study purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits.
Support multiple studies across the assigned disease group team rather than owning a single study, contributing to all active trials as needed.
Manage a patient load of approximately 10 participants across various studies and maintain appropriate documentation for each.
Aim to consent approximately 12-15 patients per year, ensuring high-quality, ethical, and compliant consent processes.
Collaborate with data and regulatory teams, applying a basic understanding of their functions to support accurate and compliant study conduct.
Follow established protocols and standard operating procedures to ensure the integrity and quality of clinical trial data.
Communicate effectively with patients, caregivers, and the multidisciplinary care team to coordinate visits and address questions related to study participation.
Contribute to a fair distribution of workload within the team, supporting an environment where responsibilities are clearly defined and manageable.
Participate in internal training and professional development opportunities to enhance clinical research knowledge and skills.
Adapt to team-specific processes and recruitment strategies based on the assigned disease group, such as thoracic oncology.
Essential Skills
At least 1 year of clinical research experience in a patient-facing role, including consenting patients and conducting patient visits.
Experience working on drug clinical trials with some level of protocol and operational complexity.
Demonstrated experience in patient recruitment and patient consent within a clinical research setting.
Ability to conduct thorough chart reviews and apply inclusion and exclusion criteria accurately.
Basic understanding of clinical research data and regulatory processes, even if not directly responsible for those functions.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, research nurses, and the broader clinical team.
Organizational skills to manage multiple studies and a defined patient load simultaneously.
Bachelor's degree.
Clinical research certification (such as SOCRA or ACRP) or strong willingness to obtain one.
Knowledge of clinical trials processes and terminology.
Work Environment
The role is based in a cancer center environment, working within a disease-specific clinical research team that typically includes three coordinators and two research nurses. The coordinator generally works 8-hour shifts, with a start time between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., depending on patient scheduling needs. The position requires working onsite every day during the first three months for onboarding, training, and integration with the team.
