Summary The Motor Vehicle Operator is under the immediate supervision of the Operations Supervisor, located within Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Battle Creek, Michigan. The instructions and assignments are verbal and/or written, and assignments are on a day-to-day basis in accordance with trip tickets, or a regular recurring run may be assigned. Responsibilities Major duties and responsibilities include: Maintaining transportation services for patients and employees of the medical center and the delivery of food and linen to the patient buildings. Driving a variety of automotive equipment, including passenger shuttle buses, food trucks, cars, ambulances, panel truck, pick-up trucks, cargo trucks up to 5-ton capacity, and dump trucks with snowplows and tailgate material spreader attached. Performing preventative maintenance and conducting inspections on assigned vehicles to ensure operational readiness and compliance with safety standards. Accurately recording all trips and related information in accordance with VA policy and established procedures. Maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of assigned vehicles to ensure a professional and safe environment. Operating vehicles in a safe and responsible manner, adhering to all applicable traffic laws, regulations, and organizational policies. Assisting in the removal of snow from Medical Center roads and sidewalks; assisting in lawncare and landscaping. Assisting as needed in the movement of furniture and boxes as required during staff or patient moves on the medical center. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee loads and unloads cargo and directs seating arrangements of passengers, assists in lifting and carrying supplies hauled, and arranges load in the vehicle to provide proper weight distribution for safety. Is required to lift, carry or push heavy articles while loading and unloading cargo. Is expected to lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds (and often up to 100 pounds or more). Is required to work under various weather and road conditions, to operate snowplow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions, and to run power tailgate on trucks in all kinds of weather conditions.
