POSITION SUMMARY:
The Press Assistant is an essential member of the production team, supporting the operation of flexographic printing presses in the manufacturing of high-quality pressure sensitive and specialty labels. Working closely with the Press Operator, this role ensures efficient press setup and tear down, smooth production runs and consistent print quality that meets both customer and company standards.
Key responsibilities include mounting plates and cylinders with precision, preparing and managing inks and substrates, and assisting with changeovers to minimize downtime. The Assistant actively contributes to meeting production targets by reducing waste, maintaining equipment readiness and ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards.
Success in this role requires attention to detail, strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven manufacturing environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the operator with setup, operation and teardown of the press to ensure efficient production and minimal downtime.
- Prepare staged inks, materials, and ancillary equipment for use and return.
- Mount, dismount and inspect printing plates, cylinders and tooling according to job specifications; verify all components and accessories before production.
- Support press changeovers by cleaning components, replacing materials and maintaining an organized and safe workspace.
- Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on press equipment, including anilox rolls and ink systems, report equipment issues promptly.
- Inspect printed materials for quality, including color, registration and print defects; collaborate with the operators or supervisors to resolve issues and maintain compliance with customer standards.
- Follow all safety procedures when handling chemicals, inks, tools and equipment.
- Train and mentor new staff on press assistant functions, safety practices and efficient work habits, when applicable.
- Collaborate effectively with operators, supervisors, quality personnel and other departments to achieve departmental goals and deadlines.
- Cross train on multiple presses and assist in other departments as needed.
- Collect, stack and handle labels at the end of the press as required.
- Perform any other duties as assigned, ensuring care and respect for all materials, tools and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in printing, graphics arts or manufacturing is a plus.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow complex instructions.
- Basic math proficiency for measuring and calculations.
- Ability to learn technical processes and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Dependable, punctual and able to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Physically able of lifting and handling up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Team oriented and able to collaborate effectively with colleagues and supervisors.
- Willingness to cross-train on multiple presses and assist in other departments as needed.
- Commitment to maintain a safe, clean and organized workspace.
