Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs industrial electrical maintenance and installation of equipment on electrical systems located at all of the college’s facilities. The work involves the technical application of electrical principles and automated controls. High level problem-solving skills and extensive experience working with industrial type electrical systems. Effective communication skills and ability to resolve issues quickly and efficiently. The electrician will at times assist other maintenance personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
- Work day shift Monday through Friday for the purpose of maintaining the systems necessary to operate the facility
- Plan work day and understand work order priorities
- Request equipment and supplies to maintain inventory and ensure availability
- Monitor electrical work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and codes
- Inspect electrical systems, identify repairs, and recommend preventive maintenance
- Work on 480/277V and 208/120V distribution systems; occasional transfer of primary power (8,320V)
- Recognize hazards and select proper PPE
- Troubleshoot complex problems and low voltage control systems
- Analyze blueprints, schematics, and drawings for repair or installation
- Use department software for requisitions, scheduling, documentation, and communication
- Install electrical equipment and components using appropriate tools
- Maintain electrical equipment and tools for safe operation
- Repair/replace electrical systems (motors, controllers, lighting, etc.)
- Occasionally work after hours or respond to emergencies
- Maintain electrical shop and work areas
- Work independently with limited supervision and coordinate with other trades
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Journeyman Electrical License from the State of Michigan
- Ability to maintain logs and records for material and labor reporting
- Experience with low voltage systems, security, fire alarms, and controls
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards
- Valid driver’s license in good standing
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and manuals
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Experience working at heights using lifts, ladders, or scaffolding
- Must be physically able to perform all duties
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office
- Classified as essential personnel and may be required to work when the College is closed
Additional Experiences Considered
- Associate’s Degree in electrical field
- Five (5) years of institutional, educational, or industrial maintenance experience
- Master Electrician license
- Certification to operate lifts, boom trucks, or elevated platforms
Physical Demands
- Moderate physical exertion and occasional desk work
- Requires mobility; occasional climbing, crawling, stooping, and awkward positions
- Manual dexterity required over 50% of the time with frequent reaching
- Stretch, reach, kneel, bend, twist, and walk to accomplish tasks
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment
- Moderate lifting (26–50 lbs.) without assistance
- Requires good hearing and vision, including color differentiation and distance judgment
- Frequent pushing/pulling and climbing ladders or scaffolds
- Ability to read, write, understand instructions, warnings, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
Work Environment
Often required to work in an industrial setting and exposed to conditions including:
- High noise levels
- Grease, dirt, and dust
- Hot and cold temperatures
- Outdoor work
- Exposure to chemicals and solvents
- Slippery floors
- Tight spaces
- Tall ladders or lifts
- Steam lines, hot/cold water, compressed air, natural gas
- Sanitary systems (toilets, urinals)
