Position Title: Church Custodian (Part-Time)

First Congregational Church of Saginaw has been a landmark of faith and community in downtown Saginaw since the mid-1800s. We worship together Sunday at 10:30 a.m., and maintain a welcoming facility for our members, guests, and community events. As a historic building (with roots going back to 1857) and active ministry, we value dedicated service, respect for our space, and pride in keeping things running smoothly.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a dependable individual to serve as our Custodian. The successful candidate will maintain the church property and building in a manner that ensures our facility is fully operational for worship, community use, and internal functions. This is a part-time role (~10 hours/week), ideal for someone local, skilled in maintenance work, perhaps retired or semi-retired, looking to keep busy and serve.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties: general cleaning of sanctuary, fellowship hall, classrooms, restrooms, and other spaces.
- Maintain building systems and infrastructure: basic plumbing, electrical, building maintenance tasks (minor repairs, troubleshooting, preventive upkeep).
- Operate and monitor the boiler and related HVAC equipment (working knowledge required).
- Hold keys and provide event- and building-security support: unlock/lock church and event spaces, monitor access, identify potential security issues.
- Communicate regularly with the church office, event renters, members, and outside contractors as needed.
- Coordinate or interface with contractors for more complex maintenance or repairs when directed.
- Stay attentive to building condition: observe/report areas needing repair, maintenance, or upgrades.
Qualifications / Skills:
- Proven experience in building maintenance, custodial work, or property upkeep.
- Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC/boiler systems, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, reliably and safely.
- Good communication skills: ability to coordinate with office staff, users/renters of the facility, and contractors.
- Local resident (within ~5-10 miles of Saginaw preferred) so response times are reasonable.

- Strong integrity and reliability: possessing keys to the building means trust is essential.
Working Conditions & Schedule:
- Typical schedule ~10 hours per week; days/hours will be arranged with the candidate and may vary depending on events and facility needs.
- Some flexibility required to cover occasional events or rentals.
- Physical requirements: walking, standing, bending, lifting (moderate), use of cleaning and maintenance tools; comfortable working in mechanical/utility spaces and general church environment.
- Must be comfortable being on site alone and securing the building.
Compensation:
- Hourly rate to be determined based on experience and skill level.
- Part-time, non-exempt position.
- No benefits beyond hourly pay unless otherwise discussed.
