Transfusion Medicine team members support our Blood Bank an our AABB accredited Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL). Michigan Medicine has the only AABB accredited IRL supported by an academic medical center in Michigan. We are one of only 6 academic medical centers to have an AABB accredited IRL in the US.

Operational oversight:
Provide day-to-day administrative supervision of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting high complexity test results.
Schedule employees to provide adequate and equitable staffing of all areas.
Supervise and coordinate daily operational lab activities.
Provide staff with ongoing information and assistance to perform their duties.
Monitor and make changes to workflow to achieve maximum productivity and quality.
Serve as a resource person for technical and procedural problems from staff and outside institutions.
Implement new and revised policies and procedures in the laboratory framework.
Establish an atmosphere that satisfies employees' physical needs and safety.
QC/QA/Compliance
Responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
Assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Responsible for reviewing all high complexity testing performed by trained high school graduates qualifying as high complexity testing personnel within 24 hours when a CLIA qualified general supervisor is absent.
Coordinate, implement, and participate in monitoring the laboratory Quality Assurance Program.
Assists with compliance of regulatory agency (i.e., CLIA, CAP) rules and regulations.
Orientation/Training/Competency
Provides or coordinates orientation to lab and department policies to all testing personnel.
Review and approve training checklists. Oversee and evaluate training of all personnel performing laboratory testing. Verifies staff are trained and competent prior to performing testing on patient specimens independently.
Oversees performance competency documents of testing personnel.
Personnel
Develop performance objectives for each employee and conduct formal reviews at least annually. Evaluate employee skills and assess educational and training needs periodically.
Provide timely and constructive feedback. Participate in the resolution of employee grievances. Counsel and discipline as necessary.
