A Day in the Life
The Senior Packaging Engineer will play a key role in advancing packaging solutions that support Medtronic's commitment to creating innovative, reliable medical technologies. Based at our Grand Rapids, Michigan site, this role partners closely with cross functional teams across engineering, operations, quality, and supply chain to develop and sustain packaging systems that meet regulatory, performance, and patient safety requirements throughout the product lifecycle.
Grand Rapids is a critical Medtronic manufacturing and operations hub, with a strong focus on collaboration, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence. This role offers the opportunity to work in a fast paced, hands-on environment, influencing packaging strategy for complex medical devices while driving innovation, scalability, and compliance in a high impact healthcare setting.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
Designs, develops, and tests a wide variety of containers used for the protection, display, and handling of products.
Determinespackaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protectionrequired, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering.
Responsibilities may include documentation management and/or coordination of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), andmay support prototype line development in manufacturing facilities/plants.
? Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience
OR
- Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
OR
- PhD with 0 years relevant experience.
Nice To Have
Familiarity with form fill and seal, barsealingand tray sealing
Proficiencywith troubleshooting packaging equipment and sterile barrier review
Ability to work cross functionally in a high-volume production site.
Experience supporting packaging for medical devices in a regulated manufacturing environment (FDA, ISO 11607)
Familiarity with sterile barrier systems and validation activities (e.g., seal integrity, transit testing, shelf life)
Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or external packaging suppliers
Hands-on experience with packaging materialsselectionand sustainability initiatives
Working knowledge of risk management tools (FMEA) and design controls
Experience supporting packaging changes for sustaining engineering
Proficiencywith packaging-related testing equipment and data analysis
Strong communicationskills with the ability to influence cross-functional partners
For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$97,600.00 - $146,400.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
