Job Description
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role
As the Safety Performance Integration Engineer, you will lead and execute development and validation of pedestrian to vehicle crash safety systems. General Motors has some of the largest high-performance computing centers in the industry as well as extensive physical test facilities. You will:
Hold responsibility for crashworthiness development of vehicle structure for GM Vehicle Programs, with an emphasis on the vulnerable road users and pedestrian interaction.
Lead engineering projects by demonstrating initiative, creativity, independent judgment, and project management throughout the vehicle development process.
Synthesize physical and virtual test results with respect to safety technical requirements.
Work with global teams in a collaborative environment.
Provide technical direction while working with multiple functional groups.
Hold responsible for global regulations and homologation / certification and compliance summary confirmation with documentation to verify with regulatory witness agencies and the vehicle type-approval process (typically at MPG but could also be at any government witness location globally) for programs.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
Lead projects and manage program assignments simultaneously (including technical development projects and program Advanced vehicle development) synthesizing the design and reporting vehicle system performance
Understand and apply/ execute GM Safety Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) standard work procedures for delivering quality models and simulation results (lead and drive change for sustainable process improvements and efficiency gains)
Coordinate and Lead the VRU buck CAE model and safety master model input for programs,
Perform CAE simulations to evaluate full vehicle crashworthiness performance for passive low speed vulnerable road users (VRU) interactions for load cases using LS-DYNA and Ansa software and own the outcome of the performance through the product life cycle.
Generate feasible and timely vehicle design recommendations and technical solutions to meet safety performance targets as documented in the Vehicle Technical Specifications (VTS) and achieve balance safety performance which also account for the results of VRU simulations for the legal and NCAP safety load cases (head impact, upper leg impact, lower leg impact).
Work with Advanced vehicle development Architects, Studio surface and styling, engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing, and others to identify and implement design changes as required.
Use advanced synthesis CAE tools and methods (Morphing/Variation Study/DOE/DFSS/MDO / optimization / ML/AI) to optimize the structural designs to select design options meeting the most efficient engineering solutions and improve safety performance.
Coordinate and lead physical development and validation at the assigned test facility, typically on site at the Milford Proving Grounds. Interpret results, provide direction, and guide CAE to test correlation activities.
Responsible for the creation, execution, and documentation of the VRU compliance sign-off.
Physical safety test support at the Milford Vehicle Proving Grounds including test requests, material and vehicle procurement, test, post-test teardowns, interpretation of results, issue resolution follow-through, and comparison / confirmation of CAE to test results.
Present performance status at appropriate forums on regular basis, own the results and integration of the solution sets.
Be responsible for process automation and machine learning (AI) implementation and final development for VRU performance tools.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
A Bachelor's degree in engineering, from an (ABET) accredited University is required: Mechanical, Aero, Civil, Materials, Applied Physics
4 or more years of application in virtual CAE analysis and physical testing for vehicle structures
Working knowledge of Unigraphics Nx, TeamCenter, and VisMockup
Working knowledge of CAE with experience in LS-DYNA, Primer, Metapost, ANSA, and CORA
Working knowledge of vulnerable road user CAE simulation analysis
Knowledge of vulnerable road user requirements (legal, global consumer metric/NCAP)
Working knowledge & execution experience of GM Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP)
Working knowledge of performance integration, component manufacturing, & vehicle assembly
Willingness to learn new skills and adapt expeditiously
Demonstrated ability to work independently & with others in a collaborative team environment
High level of analytical ability to solve challenging problems and to integrate complex systems
Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred qualifications)
Master's or PhD in Engineering, physics or math
Experience in execution of Global NCAP and Legal VRU requirements (ECER127 protocol revisions and vehicle homologation and witness experience)
Advanced working knowledge of LS -Dyna & Ansa software, and scripting and Python experience
Knowledge of decision fixed points and global math fidelity template requirements
