Kelly® Engineering is seeking an Automation Project Manager for a direct-hire opportunity with a specialized industrial automation and controls organization in Royal Oak, Michigan. Overview
This organization designs, builds, and integrates custom PLC-based control systems and UL 508A control panels for industrial and automotive testing environments. Its projects often support life safety, facility automation, and research operations where dependable controls, instrumentation, and system performance are essential.
The Automation Project Manager will oversee projects from contract award through installation, commissioning, and final sign-off. This person will manage scope, schedule, budget, field coordination, procurement, subcontractors, and client communication while helping ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Responsibilities:
Lead turnkey electrical and control system projects from kickoff through completion in industrial and automotive research environments.
Develop and manage project scope, schedules, budgets, and resource plans in coordination with internal teams, contractors, and clients.
Review blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to verify compliance with design intent, NEC requirements, and project specifications.
Oversee procurement, subcontractors, and vendors to keep projects aligned with cost, quality, and schedule expectations.
Support construction estimating, contract coordination, and material and manpower planning for electrical controls work.
Monitor field installation and commissioning activities, ensuring safe execution and adherence to OSHA, NFPA, and site-specific requirements.
Coordinate system integration, instrumentation, and troubleshooting efforts during installation, startup, and final acceptance.
Provide project updates, risk visibility, and issue resolution across internal stakeholders, customers, and field teams.
Qualifications :
Associate's or bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial automation, or a related technical field preferred.
5+ years of experience in automation, electrical controls, or industrial control systems.
3+ years of project management experience in construction, controls integration, or industrial environments.
Strong knowledge of PLC/HMI, SCADA, instrumentation, electrical schematics, and system integration.
Hands-on experience with construction site coordination, electrical installations, and field troubleshooting.
Experience using project and construction tools such as Bluebeam, Procore, BIM 360, or similar platforms.
Understanding of construction estimating, scheduling, procurement, and contract administration is preferred.
Ability to manage multiple projects and communicate effectively with clients, trades, engineering teams, and vendors.
Working knowledge of NEC, OSHA, NFPA, and other applicable electrical and safety standards.
