EMPLOYMENT: 40/hrs Week, 9 weeks; Dependent on funding availability. Jun 15th - Aug 14th
This is an exciting opportunity to spend your summer working outdoors, gaining hands-on skills working with plants, and getting to know the workings of a large National Forest system nursery (one of only 6 in the country!). No prior experience is necessary. Get paid to work outside right here in Watersmeet while caring for trees that will be used to restore our public and treaty lands!
Show up ready to work at 6:00am each day at the J. W. Toumey Nursery in Watersmeet (transportation not provided). Out by 2:30pm each afternoon!
Clean and extract seeds from fruits and pinecones
Prepare soil and sow seeds
Transplant seedlings
Clean, move, and organize seedling trays and container blocks
Prepare seeds for cold storage (stratification)
Thin seedlings by hand so plants have room to grow
Weed in greenhouses and fields
Mix and apply fertilizer
Water and fertilize seedlings
Check plant health and growth
Collect basic data, track inventory, and label materials
Help with packing and shipping of seedlings
Clean up, organization, and odd jobs, as assigned
Participate in weekly staff meetings
Off-Site Fieldwork (Some Days)
Assist program manager with plant surveys and seed collection
Help plant seedlings on National Forest land
Monitor survival of planted seedlings
Skills & Qualifications:
Qualifications:
Must be 16-18 years of age
Must have knowledge of the Lac Vieux Desert Ojibwe people and their spiritual, traditional, historical, and ancestral ties of the community, while also agreeing not to publish or otherwise distribute culturally sensitive information to the public without proper consent.
Knowledge and understanding of missions, organizational goals, and objectives of the Tribe.
Must be willing to work outdoors and in the field daily under a range of weather conditions.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
The applicant must pass a pre-employment drug test.
