Position Summary
The Test Editor ensures the clarity, accuracy, and quality of high-stakes medical certification exams. This role focuses on editorial review and item development, working closely with staff and physician volunteers to guide test content through every stage of development. Ideal candidates will bring a sharp editorial eye, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to synthesize complex medical material into accessible content.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit and review written and graphic examination materials for clarity, accuracy, and alignment with editorial guidelines.
- Provide quality control across test items, case materials, and volunteer assignments.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs), guiding the item development process and providing editorial feedback.
- Draft and manage volunteer item assignments and support case development teams.
- Onboard and train new SMEs and support the annual Item Writers Workshop.
- Maintain and improve editorial workflows, manuals, and style guides.
- Serve as liaison with volunteers and vendors to ensure a smooth item development process.
- Contribute to departmental initiatives, problem-solving efforts, and presentation development.
- Represent ABEM at external conferences and meetings.
- Travel up to 15% of the time.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related field.
- 3–5 years of editorial experience, preferably in medical or testing environments.
- Exceptional grammar, writing, and editing skills.
- Ability to synthesize complex content and provide thoughtful, high-level editorial guidance.
- Familiarity with AMA style and/or medical terminology strongly preferred.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Experience with item banking platforms (e.g., ExamDeveloper), project management tools (e.g., Trello, Smartsheet), and Microsoft Office 365.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships.
- Must handle sensitive information with professionalism and confidentiality.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Standard office environment with low to moderate noise levels.
- Regularly required to communicate clearly, use hands and fingers, and view a computer screen for extended periods.
- May occasionally need to stand, walk, or reach with arms and hands.
