SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary: $56,605 - $77,515 anually, commensurate with experience and qualifications
Benefits: Our comprehensive benefits package includes health insurance with five different plans, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, voluntary insurance options, and a supplemental life program. Employees are entitled to sick time, vacation time, bereavement days, holidays, and longevity pay. Flexible spending accounts (FSA) or healthcare savings accounts (HSA) are available based on the elected medical plan. Additionally, retirement savings plans are provided through the State of Michigan Office of Retirement Services (ORS). These benefits are available after just one full day of employment.

ROLE AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Payroll Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day payroll operations for a large intermediate school district. This position ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with federal and state regulations, and efficient payroll administration. The Payroll Supervisor provides guidance and support to payroll staff while collaborating with human resources and finance to maintain accurate employee records and payroll data.
Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):
- Supervise and coordinate the processing of payroll for all district employees, ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax laws, wage and hour laws, and school district policies.
- Manages payroll tax reporting, deductions, and compliance with retirement and benefits contributions.
- Handles payroll audits and work with external auditors as needed.
- Manages and optimizes the district's payroll system, ensuring data integrity and efficiency.
- Monitors payroll expenses and provides analysis for budgeting and financial planning.
- Assists in forecasting payroll-related costs and making recommendations to district leadership.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll related inquiries and issue resolution.
- Provides guidance and training to payroll staff and district employees regarding payroll policies and procedures.
- Maintain and update employee payroll records, including salary adjustments, benefits deductions, and leave balances.
- Oversee proper processing of payroll-related transactions, including direct deposits, garnishments, and overtime payments.
- Manages the implementation and maintenance of payroll software and reporting tools.
- Develop and improve payroll procedures to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Review payroll registers and reports to verify accuracy before payroll submission.
- Support budget forecasting by providing payroll cost analysis and reports.
- Maintains confidentiality and ensures ethical handling of payroll and employee records.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all accounting areas of operation within the business services department.
- Utilizes Microsoft Excel and SchoolsOPEN software to enter and receive information such as attendance, personnel, and financial data.
- Serves as a leader in SchoolsOPEN user groups.
- Provides assistance to local districts as needed.
- Develops and maintains written documentation on processes and procedures to include staff development training for GISD and constituent district staff members.
- Consistently models Win-Win Leadership.
Other Duties:
- Assists in the preparation of special projects or audits.
- Serves on district committees as requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Composes and prepares correspondence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, business management or related business field required. Five or more years of documented successful school accounting experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement. Coursework in advanced accounting, economics, finance, math, and statistics preferred.
Experience:
Five years documented work experience in accounting preferred. Experience with SchoolsOPEN software is desirable.
Skills/Other:
Required to pass proficiency testing in business math, numerical data entry, Microsoft Word, and Excel at the intermediate skill level. Ability to create PowerPoint presentations preferred. Ability to utilize district technology, and works to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district Ability to solve complex problems, manage multiple tasks, demonstrate effective time management skills, meet deadlines, and produce accurate work. Ability to relate effectively with others through oral and written communication. Strong teamwork, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Ability to work a flexible workday, work week and work year. Demonstrated mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the essential duties of the position. Discretion with confidential information. Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times. Ability to maintain a poised and professional image at all times. Ability to exercise good judgment and make decisions in accordance with board policies and administrative guidelines. Thorough knowledge of accounting principles. Ability to develop spreadsheets. Ability to work with an integrated accounting system with a specific understanding of the effects on transactions and their impact on financial records.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and operate a computer. The employee is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and use an occasional step stool. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds, such as reports.
Work Environment:
The office is an open work environment which at times can be noisy at times. The position demands meeting deadlines with time constraints. This position is frequently required to interact with staff and with the public, which requires courtesy and discretion. The position also requires collaboration among the payroll team and with other departments and positions.
