This position at the Mihcigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) offers a rare opportunity to shape how surveying is performed across the entire department. As the supervising land surveyor for the Survey Support Section, you will lead a highly specialized team responsible for advancing survey methods, technology and best practices statewide.
You'll play a critical role in modernizing survey operations, managing the development and implementation of tools that automate survey processes and asset collection to improve efficiency, effectiveness and safety. From incorporating the latest surveying technologies into construction activities to leading pilot projects that test new equipment and software, you will help position MDOT at the forefront of innovation.
Rather than focusing on a single region, this role influences survey practices department-wide. You will provide training to staff across Michigan in the use of surveying hardware and software, supporting quality assurance efforts to ensure survey deliverables meet established standards and serving as the final authority on all legal matters relating to land surveying within MDOT.
As a leader at MDOT, you'll collaborate with professionals across regions, technical disciplines and experience levels. As the next land surveyor, you will be responsible for:
Assisting the section supervisors in allocating staff resources, identifying operational program needs, developing funding strategies based on program/project priorities, and authorizing funding levels when needed.
Identifying training needs for section staff and monitoring progress to ensure that staff is fully trained, encouraging cross-training opportunities within the workplace. You will also implement a formal, annual performance evaluation process of staff.
Managing the development of methods and technology to automate survey processes and asset collection for increased efficiency, effectiveness, and safety. You will also partner with internal and external resources to accomplish strategic objectives.
Collaborating with other bureaus, divisions, consultants and contractors to gain consensus to ensure electronic data flows between business processes to efficiently design, build and operate transportation systems.
Performing pilot projects and research using new technology and the use of existing technology for new purposes.
Serving as the final authority on all legal matters relating to land surveying involving MDOT.

Required Education and Experience
Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree with a major in surveying.
Experience
Six years of professional experience conducting land surveys equivalent to a Land Surveyor, including three years equivalent to a Land Surveyor-Licensed 12, two years equivalent to a Land Surveyor Manager 13 or Land Surveyor Licensed Specialist 13, or
one year equivalent to a Land Surveyor Manager 14 or Land Surveyor Licensed Specialist 14.

Possess a land surveyor license issued by the State of Michigan in accordance with the provisions of Public Act 299 of 1980.
Possess a valid driver's license.
