Phlebotomist

Trinity Health Oakland Hospital is seeking a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist to join our Laboratory Services team. In this important role, you will perform high-quality phlebotomy and specimen collection across inpatient and outpatient settings, ensuring accuracy, safety, and exceptional patient care.
Position Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, labeling, and processing blood specimens in medical/surgical units, behavioral medicine, outpatient labs, client offices, and satellite locations. Additional responsibilities may include specimen reception, processing, and supporting laboratory workflows. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples using proper phlebotomy techniques (vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, capillary)
- Follow all policies related to specimen handling, order of draw, labeling, and timed collections
- Document specimen collection and submit samples for laboratory analysis
- Rotate between inpatient and outpatient locations as needed
- Respond to department needs via pager for STATs, communications, and staffing
- Perform specimen processing tasks: answering phones, placing samples on automated lines, centrifuging, logging specimens, and entering lab requests
- Assist with courier dispatch and outreach operations
- Complete daily assignments and follow job instruction sheets
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Demonstrate commitment to Trinity Health values, ethical standards, and regulatory compliance
Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of Medical Assistant, CNA, or Phlebotomy program required
- Associate degree in biological sciences or health-related field preferred
Required Certifications
- Current certification from one of the following:
- Current Heart Saver (HS) certification
- Candidates must obtain certification within 12 months of hire to remain qualified.
Skills & Aptitudes
- Ability to stand, walk, and move for up to 100% of work hours
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, lab orders, anatomy & physiology related to phlebotomy
- Familiarity with PC applications preferred
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
- High level of mental concentration and attention to detail
Experience
- Minimum 3 months of inpatient phlebotomy experience, or
- Experience in a medical/healthcare environment, OR
- Successful completion of a phlebotomy externship
Working Conditions
- Sitting up to 10% of the day; standing 40%; walking 50%
- Frequent bending/stooping and fine hand manipulation
- Exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals
