Position Summary:
Serves as an accommodation specialist in the determination and implementation of academic, housing and meal plan accommodations for students with disabilities. This position provides ongoing assistance related to students’ disability and accommodation needs, i.e., clarifies difficulties, identifies resources, collaborate with faculty and partner office
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in education, human resources, therapeutic recreation, or similar field.
Two years working in higher education.
Demonstrated experience with cultivating a culture of creativity, care and concern.
Excellent critical thinking, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to work comfortably with disabled people and people from diverse backgrounds.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain composure during difficult situations and assist individuals while working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to present to various audiences.
Experience with various platforms such as Microsoft Office, Windows and Apple OSX .
Familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended Act of 2008.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in disability/accessibility services, residence life/university housing, compliance (athletics, Title IX, Civil Rights), or academic advising.
Knowledge of case management software such as Accommodate or Advocate.
Experience with adaptive software such as Read & Write, Genio, Equatio, JAWS , NVDA .
Experience using BlackBoard Ultra or similar LMS system, online proctoring software, and Respondus lockdown browser.
Experience administering technology licensing, applications and services.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Reviews and interprets disability related documentation for the purpose of verifying disability and identifying functional limitations.
Meets with individual students and engages in the interactive process to determine reasonable and appropriate academic, housing and meal plan accommodations.
Reviews and determines outcome of Assistance Animal requests in alignment with the Fair Housing Act.
Collaborates with campus partners, including but not limited to: Residence Life, CMU Dining, Counseling Center, Academic Advising, Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, CMU Cares, Registrars, Information Technology, Curriculum and Instructional Support, Testing Center, Academic Colleges & Departments.
Represents the office at various student-focused events. (Get Acquainted Day, Orientation and other events/programs as requested)
Meets with prospective students and families/supporters.
Provides Consultation to CMU faculty and staff regarding ADA academic accommodations.
Documents all interactions within the case management system.
Serves on campus committees, task forces, and steering groups as appointed.
Provides training to disabled students on the use of assistive and adaptive equipment.
Provides alternate forms of media as needed based on approved accommodations.
Responsible for issuing software license and managing user databases.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
