JOB SUMMARY:
Saginaw Valley State University is proud of its profound regional, state, and global impact, and is currently seeking an innovative, strategic-minded leader to become its next Director of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Data Insights. Previously named The Office of Institutional Research, this newly named Office of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Data Insights (IREDI) functions as the official source of university institutional data and provides accurate and timely information to support institutional planning, policy formation, and decision making. The director will provide guidance, management, and oversight of office operations to the Office. In addition, the director will find new ways to quantify and communicate enrollment trends, student success, and the significant impact of SVSU and its students on our broader community. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that helpful and actionable information within the university community is sufficiently shared and presented.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee the Office of Institutional Research, Effectiveness, and Data Insights which requires the preparation of data and drafts of reports, data analysis, data summaries, charts, and graphs requested by the President, Vice Presidents, Academic Deans and Enrollment Management leaders.
- Provide leadership in developing data strategy to support decision making, while partnering with IT and senior leadership in planning and implementing data systems to support SVSU’s ongoing needs.
- Work as a positive teammate and key leader in the Enrollment Management division, supporting growth and fostering a cohesive environment where student success, enrollment, affordability are pursued across departmental lines; offering timely and accurate data and information to support a data-minded and goal-driven approach to enrollment.
- Compile and report data to reputable external parties that measure and publicize the university’s performance ensuring that the university is accurately categorized and characterized in the public realm.
- In collaboration with leadership, develop and implement annual data reporting schedule to include things such as: first majors reports, semester credit hours, online/hybrid reports, enrollment reports, official census numbers, etc.
- Respond to ad hoc data requests across campus and oversee any analysis conducted and reported by the office to campus stakeholders, making sure results are accurate.
- Provide support to key personnel in using data to inform decision making around student success initiatives, strategic planning, accreditation, and the effective deployment of resources.
- Oversee the compilation and publishing of the common data set, IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System), and HEIDI (Higher Education Institutional Data Inventory).
- Demonstrate ability to interpret and communicate research design and statistical findings to a variety of audiences across the institution.
- Work with university leadership and colleges/departments to provide access to key institutional data metrics and operational data through dashboards, data warehouse, and other reporting systems.
- Manage departmental budgets.
- Supervise and coordinate work assignments of staff.
- Serve as a university resource to understand available institutional data and develop requests for data to inform effectiveness, planning, and decision-making.
- Serve on university committees as appropriate and requested.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Supervision is received from the Vice President for Enrollment Management.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Responsible for coordinating and supervising an Associate Director, Research Specialist, Administrative Secretary, and student employees including planning, assigning, and directing activities; and hiring, training, and appraising performance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree.

Five years’ experience in institutional research, preferably in higher education.

Knowledgeable in descriptive and inferential statistical methods, social science research methods, basic survey design techniques, data mining and database management, and familiarity with procedures of statistical analysis and report writing, preferably in higher education.

Preferred knowledge of SPSS, R, or any other statistical packages.

Proficient in the use of PC-based Windows tools (e.g., word processing and spreadsheets) and relevant statistical software packages.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Ability to coordinate research projects and to work effectively as a team member.
