ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The examples of functions listed in this job description are representative, but not necessarily exhaustive, of any one position in this job classification. Management may assign other functions not listed herein at its sole discretion.
- Loads, unloads, lifts, and moves soil, rocks, brick, plants, sod, mulch/bark chips debris, etc. using a wheelbarrow; digs trenches and installs drains, pipes, etc.;
- clears ditches, backfills trenches, and performs handwork as necessary using a pick, shovel, or other hand tools (e.g., shovel, rake, broom, clippers, wheelbarrow);
- distributes bagged products, pipe, fittings, tools, and other construction and design-build materials; operates power equipment (e.g., small tractor loaders, trenchers, rototillers, augers, compressors, jackhammers);
- uses small power equipment (e.g., drills, sanders, saws);
- performs excavation and hand trenching;
- applies fertilizer and planting tablets;
- sets sod, sprinkler heads, non-sewage catch basins, and tree stakes;
- digs and back fills holes for plants, trees, and shrubs;
- performs handwork as necessary using a pick, shovel, rake, or other hand tools for extended periods of time;
- performs proper soil levelling and rough grading using a rake;
- clears and back fills ditches and trenches for irrigation and drains;
- properly prepares, connects, and installs irrigation and drainage pipes using glue;
- performs general clean up at the work site;
- uses burlaps/tarps with plant cuttings, job debris onto trailers/containers effectively;
- maintains tools and equipment to ensure safety;
- performs hardscape functions (e.g., cement, concrete, mortar, mixing, applying, setting);
- installs small or large-scale retaining walls using pre-cast retaining wall blocks, cinder blocks, or stone;
- installs and/or builds ponds, fountains, arbors, fences, or pergolas;
- builds custom fire pits or fireplaces out of stone, cinder block, or pre-cast concrete materials;
- installs artificial turf, decomposed granite, and other gravel substrates;
- plants new vegetation and sod lawns;
- installs landscape lighting and irrigation;
- installs conduit, pulls wire, and ensures safe connections;
- performs material removal (e.g., vegetation, landscape, asphalt and concrete removal;
- installs irrigation main lines, lateral lines, sprinklers, valves, manifolds and drip irrigation;
- conducts basic soil preparation;
- recognizes areas for improvement in the landscape and communicates this to Design-Build Foreman;
- actively participates in safety meetings;
- role models PPE usage;
- actively contributes to achieving performance goals (e.g., job quality, safety, customer service);
- complies with all company policies and safety procedures;
- communicates effectively with Foreman and co-workers;
- works efficiently to complete assigned tasks without supervision;
- immediately reports unsafe conditions or faulty equipment to the Foreman;
- demonstrates basic knowledge of plant pests and appropriate pesticide to apply;
- capable of visually identifying at least 10 plants and 5 types of ground cover by name;
- understands the relationship between job quality and customer service, satisfaction, and retention;
- ensures work is performed to the company's and customer's expectations;
- performs Winter Service (e.g., snow clearing, winter watering, installations, pruning) as needed;
- provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and Company staff in a courteous and efficient manner.
