Position Summary
The Cardiovascular Surgical Technologist First Assist (CSTFA) plays a vital role in supporting cardiac surgical procedures by working closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care.
In this role, you will provide advanced intraoperative assistance, maintain the sterile field, anticipate surgical team needs, and support patients throughout the surgical process.
What You’ll Do
Surgical First Assist Responsibilities
• Serve as first assist during cardiovascular surgical procedures under surgeon supervision
• Provide exposure, handle tissue, assist with suturing, and help control bleeding
• Perform endoscopic vein harvesting independently after competency validation
• Anticipate surgeon needs and prepare instruments and supplies accordingly
• Monitor the operative field and respond to changes in patient condition
Scrub & Intraoperative Support
• Perform full surgical scrub duties as needed
• Prepare and maintain sterile surgical fields
• Interpret procedure cards and verify case readiness
• Ensure equipment availability and troubleshoot supply needs
• Maintain awareness of proper instrument and equipment use
Team Collaboration & Quality Support
• Collaborate with surgeons, RN circulators, anesthesia staff, and surgical teams
• Update preference cards and case documentation
• Participate in quality improvement and process initiatives
• Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times
Qualifications
Required:
• High school diploma or GED
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
• Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST)
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist First Assistant program
• Demonstrated competency in cardiac surgical procedures
• Ability to independently perform endoscopic vein harvesting
• BLS certification by completion of core orientation
Preferred:
• Recent Surgical Technologist experience within the past 5 years
Skills & Physical Requirements
• Strong attention to detail and ability to remain calm under pressure
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to interpret equipment data and operate surgical technology
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist with patient positioning
• Capable of working in a fast-paced surgical environment
