Essential functions (job duties):
The Graduate Programs office at Wayne State University's Mike Ilitch School of Business is seeking to fill an Academic Advisor I.
Communicate effectively and accurately academic and non-academic requirements, policies, and procedures of the University and the Mike Ilitch School of Business.
Maintain continuous advising relationships with students; engage students in comprehensive discussions ranging from initial program preparedness through career planning.
Monitor and communicate with students using university systems, social media, small group formats, and face-to-face sessions, as appropriate.
Coordinate recruitment and retention efforts within the Mike Ilitch School of Business.
Work collaboratively with supervisors and experienced advisors while functioning with minimal supervision.
Serve as a liaison with other university units; participate in meetings and contribute as an effective member of a team.
Advise prospective and current graduate students within the Mike Ilitch School of Business by providing a comprehensive suite of advising services, including guidance on admission, registration, and graduation requirements.
Conduct information sessions and provide academic advising on the main campus and at extension centers.
Assist with the School's recruiting efforts, including representing the department at corporate events, college fairs, and other recruitment activities; coordinate special programs as needed.
Prepare, maintain, and update graduate work plans using Excel.
Verify student eligibility and completion of certification and graduation requirements.
Facilitate student orientation and information sessions.
Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies, procedures, and technological tools related to academic advising and higher education.
Maintain availability to work evenings and weekends as requested.
Maintain availability to work a hybrid schedule, as required.
Possess reliable personal transportation.
Qualifications:
· Minimum bachelor's degree (Advisor I) in education, counseling, or a related field; master's degree preferred.
· Minimum of three (3) years of academic advising experience at a university or community college level for Advisor I, working with a diverse student population.
· Demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate and apply extensive and complex information.
· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish rapport with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders.
· Prior experience in a higher education setting (preferred).
· Strong time management, organizational, written and oral communication, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills.
· Proficiency with computer applications; experience with Banner, Excel, and Salesforce preferred.
· Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
· Working knowledge of social media platforms (preferred).
· Knowledge of best practices in academic advising.
· Experience working with diverse student populations, including variations in ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic background, and first-generation status.
· Ability to support students with varying levels of academic preparedness.
