Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
In this role, Senior Hardware Design Engineer - Low Voltage Electric Power, you will be responsible for Hardware Design & Execution for any variety of components in the electric power space (e.g. Power Distribution Units, Battery Management Systems, Power Convertors, Inverters, etc.) and develop and/or improve hardware development process with center of expertise. You will work with cross functional teams (semiconductor, DREs, GM software, PCB layout, Mechanical Engineering, Supplier, Validation) to deliver quality product on time.
You will effectively achieve program milestones by thorough and effective program management.
I am seeking a high performing independent engineer to develop winning execution strategies, oversee solutions, resolve issues, and deliver continuous improvement for electric power components considering quality, cost, and timing.
What you'll do:
Collaborate with other teams, such as software, diagnostic, mechanical, and manufacturing teams, and strategize with Tech Specialists, DRE's, and Safety to ensure seamless integration of electrical hardware designs into the overall product.
Lead embedded designs for advanced module architectures.
Lead new IC design/development strategic to advanced in-vehicle architectures
Lead electrical schematic design and PCB layout
Optimize proposed electrical hardware designs, considering factors such as cost, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
Support next generation designs in digital/analog hardware including Gig+ ethernet, processors, memory, eFuse, FET, HSD/LSD, various semi associated within electric power components
Perform/Review electrical worst-case analysis, Power distribution Analysis, Component selection and compatibility Analysis, Environment Analysis, EMC analysis, Weibull and other component robustness analysis
Represent the GM HW team as design expert in the core technologies developed among the team
Optimize design and verification tests/analysis for electronic circuit design including five-point parametric tests and define/implement end of line production tests
Lead development process for either supplier owned or inhouse designs with production build team ensuring quality documentation (PFMEA, Control Plans, monitoring systems, EOL).
Continuous Improvement mindset by refining/optimizing requirements per KPIs with Electric Power team
Maintain component Hardware Design deliverables e.g., Block Diagram, Schematics, PCB layout, etc.
Lead Peer Reviews and resolve issues (e.g. integration, interfaces, systemic issues)
Support formal change control and ISO9001quality standards for Engineering Change Request (ECR) of components and appropriate documentation of design and process.
Support Assembly Plant issue resolution
Provide technical leadership for rapid issue resolution and root cause analysis
Support Product Investigations (SFI Process)
Lead Cost Reduction initiatives from evaluation to implementation
Provides direction to Design Release Engineers (DREs) in product development team meeting
Create and maintain Best Practices
Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within the electric power team and across other SMTs.
Ensure all Key Performance Indicators (i.e., piece cost, investment, mass, base engineering content, performance, and IPTV) are met.
Develop/Review/Approve all In-process Electrical verification for a component validation (includes component software verification) collaborating with DREs and others to ensure the plan is executed in time to meet program imperatives.
Develop new or improve analysis / simulation or testing to improve KPIs and incorporate into standard validation plans.
Provide engineering expertise in Formal Design, Peer and Quality Valve reviews to ensure robust engineering designs and processes.
Support vehicle integration activity for pre-production and production vehicles
Lead/participate in issue resolution for design and development issues, ECU warranty analysis, parts restriction and report updates as required to Engineering and Vehicle Team leadership
Lead/support DFMEA/PFMEAs/control plans/End of Line testing/APQP development/ Lean manufacturing/ 8D issue resolution/ compliance to ISO9001 and TS16949 compliance.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor of Science in Engineering Required. Masters degree preferred
Professional experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation and/or PCB layout & supportive documentation
Minimum 7+ years working experience in automotive hardware electronics design
Experience in design & analysis tools like Mentor Graphics (schematic and layout) Mathcad, PSpice and Saber
High speed Communication Buses (Ethernet, SPI, I2C, IsoSPI, UART, PCIe, SerDes...)
In-depth knowledge of Low voltage power distribution (eFuse, FET, Thermal, Li-Ion Battery, DC/DC converter)
In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering process (FMEA, Preliminary Hazard Analyses)
In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements (EMC, Environmental durability, Electrical, robustness, Signal integrity and noise mitigation, etc.)
In-depth knowledge of verification and validation processes
In-depth knowledge of embedded software development, testing and associated tools
Understanding of hardware design and failure mode
Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
Thorough knowledge of design development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures.
Highly developed oral and written communications skills
Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally within Electrical and across other SMTs.
Demonstrated problem solving ability.
High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output
Very high level of analytical problem-solving skills where problems are very unusual and extremely difficult.
