Requirements
- Must be at least 17 years of age. Work permit required if still in High School.
- Successful completion of the eight (8) hour state-approved Feeding Assistant training program provided by HSS.
- Strong communication skills, compassion, reliability, respect for residents’ dignity.
Summary
Performs the full range of kitchen related responsibilities in a healthcare setting including but not limited to:
- Assists residents at meal and snack times by offering fluids, prompting, cueing and assisting as required.
- Greets residents and engages in mealtime processes.
- Helps residents navigate meal choices.
- Enters resident preferences or requests into an electronic system and communicates those preferences to dietary/food service.
- Monitors resident swallowing, intake and meal response; promptly report any concerns (e.g., choking, coughing) to the supervising nurse.
- Cleans up trays, dining areas/resident rooms and assists with meal setup as assigned.
- Maintains accurate documentation of feeding assistance, intake data and any changes in resident condition.
- Follows infection control practices, resident rights, privacy and facility policies.
- Must complete state-approved training program and work only with residents cleared as “no complicated feeding problems.
- Works under the direct supervision of an RN or LPN; scope does not include transfers, toileting, full nursing care or tube feeding.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular and punctual attendance is required.
