Position: Truancy Officer
Reports to: Superintendent, Montcalm Area Intermediate School District

Job Summary: As an essential member of the school district team, a Truancy Officer, often referred to as an Attendance Officer, plays a critical role in fostering a positive educational environment by addressing and mitigating truancy and absenteeism among students. By collaborating closely with students, parents, educators, and community agencies, a Truancy Officer not only enforces attendance policies but also supports students in overcoming barriers to consistent school participation. Truancy Officers serve as district liaison to parents, law enforcement agencies, and court personnel.
Qualifications/Skills:
- High School graduate or GED
- Preferred prior experience in Social Work, Sociology, or Juvenile Justice or Law Enforcement.
- A minimum of two years professional experience working with youth and parents is preferred.
- Possession of verbal and written communication skills to conduct meetings and process paperwork required.
- Empathy and a non-judgmental approach, as the role requires being both an enforcer and an ally.
- Knowledge of local and state attendance laws and regulations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Familiarity with community resources and support services.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Flexibility to work varied hours.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Investigate cases of chronic absenteeism and truancy.
- Collaborate with school staff and administrators to develop attendance improvement plans.
- Communicate with parents and guardians to address attendance issues and make a reasonable effort to gain their cooperation to improve attendance.
- Refer families to community resources and support services as needed.
- Prepare and maintain accurate reports and documentation.
- Issue warnings, file complaints against students, parents, or individuals with parental control in accordance with compulsory attendance laws and refer to appropriate courts.
- Assist school districts to ensure that school age children are not withdrawn from school illegally.
- Investigate and review cases of suspected “no show” or dropout students.
- Attend meetings and serve on committees related to school attendance and truancy.
- Work with law enforcement agencies when necessary.
- Represent the ISD and school districts in court hearings resulting from attendance problems.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment: Part Time; 20-25 hours per month. $20.00 per hour

Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office environment at the Helen Hamler Administration building, 621 New St., Stanton, MI 48888. The position requires occasional evening or weekend work and travel throughout the ISD service area.
