
Do you have a passion for working with our area’s youth? Northwest Michigan Works! is seeking a dynamic and compassionate individual to fulfill the role of JMG Specialist at one or more schools located within Charlevoix and Emmet counties. Currently this position would serve schools within Boyne Falls and Boyne City. The role is responsible for helping young people stay in school through graduation, teaching essential workplace skills, and for providing work-based learning experiences that lead to career advancement opportunities and/or assists them in enrolling in a postsecondary institution.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Responsible for teaching youth in a group setting following JMG program guidelines and school policies. Using teaching techniques, impart power workplace skills and help students learn about career pathways related to their interests.
- Organize experiences to help students explore careers. Examples include securing classroom speakers, taking students on field trips to businesses, setting up job shadows, or arranging work experiences such as a co-op.
- Work with students on their post secondary educational plans. This can include helping students understand the education needed for their chosen path, taking students on tours of colleges or trade schools, and helping with the financial aid process.
- Act as a support and mentor to students in regards to their education and career path. This includes providing students with items needed for work and/or school within program guidelines and budget. These are generally items such as gas cards and clothing for work.
- Assist with team, school, or organizational wide initiatives. Organizes, creates, and implements new projects while evaluating and improving the existing services.
- Tailors the program and teaching methods for the needs of each specific youth and implements an intervention strategy for each individual. Also tailors the program based on the needs and wishes of the school.
- Responsibilities include case management for all youth, follow up services for past participants, and employer outreach.
- Data entry, proper following of procedures, and accurate paperwork completion is necessary.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Experience working with youth in an educational or human services setting.
- Technical & Professional Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, social media, and other business software.
- Case management experience, including data entry and tracking.
- Comfort and skill in presenting to individuals and groups, including leading workshops and informational sessions.
- Interpersonal & Communication Skills
- Ability to build effective partnerships and collaborative relationships.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
- Personal Attributes
- Ability to lead, mentor, and coach students in a positive and empowering manner.
- Highly organized, energetic, and optimistic.
- Understanding of at-risk youth and family dynamics.
- Familiarity with community resources.
- Additional Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to be insured to drive agency and school vehicles.
- Willingness to travel for program events and student activities.
Compensation
This is a full-time salaried position paying $45,000 per year. The employee is entitled to the Northwest Michigan Works! benefits package including: Comprehensive health, dental and vision insurance with employer paid premiums; life insurance; employer paid deferred compensation retirement package; paid vacation, paid sick leave, personal time, and paid holidays.
