The Second Shift Leadperson is a working leader who oversees second shift operations by directing workloads, serving as a liaison between staff and management, maintaining a safe and organized environment, and performing warehouse and yard duties as needed to meet customer expectations.
Typical Responsibilities
- Meet or exceed customer expectations by providing a positive customer experience.
- Direct, coordinate, and assign daily tasks and work assignments for second shift staff.
- Monitor work reports to ensure accurate pulling, loading, and inventory levels.
- Receive and properly put away product.
- Pull orders and prepare shipments.
- Load accurately picked orders for delivery.
- Load pipe, pallets, and packages onto flatbed trailers using powered industrial equipment (as applicable).
- Maintain organization, cleanliness, appearance, and safety of the warehouse and yard.
- Keep management informed of second shift progress, needs, and issues.
- Provide input on employee performance.
- Train new employees.
- Answer after-hours calls and assist employees, customers, and others, escalating issues to management when appropriate.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform all duties safely and in compliance with company policies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Leadperson acts as the liaison between management and second shift staff and is responsible for:
- Directing and assigning daily work.
- Training new employees.
- Communicating staffing needs, performance feedback, safety issues, and shift concerns to management.
- Supporting informal problem solving.
- Maintaining a safe, productive, and professional second shift environment.
This position does not have full authority over:
- Hiring
- Disciplinary actions or terminations
- Complaint/grievance resolution
- Formal performance evaluations
- Pay, promotions, or reclassification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of warehouse and yard layouts and product types.
- Strong knowledge of company policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational, stress management, motivation, and delegation skills.
- Ability to lead by example and set a positive tone for the shift.
- Computer literate with working knowledge of Eclipse.
- Sound judgment on when to escalate issues to management.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent; or
- 1–2 years of related experience and training; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications & Licenses
- Ability to pass operator exam and safely operate powered industrial equipment.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Must pass a substance abuse screening.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Frequently required to walk, stand, talk, hear, grasp, handle, reach, and use fingers.
- Regularly required to sit, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must perform essential job functions safely and with consistent alertness.
- Vision requirements include near and far vision, depth perception, and color vision.
- Work performed primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure to extreme weather.
