PAID ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER
CITY OF MT. PLEASANT
General Summary
Under direct supervision of the Fire Chief, Duty Officer, or Paid On-Call Fire Officer, responds to fire alarms and fire prevention activities as required; participates in firefighting activities until such time as equipment is restored to a readiness condition; and assists in the general maintenance and operation of the equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Responds to dispatched alarms for fires and other emergencies.
As directed, places ladders and removes when no longer needed; ventilates buildings by using horizontal, vertical, or positive pressure ventilation techniques. Uses pry bars, axes, sledge hammers and saws to force entry and to provide for ventilation. Places positive pressure fans to remove smoke and toxic gases.
Advances hose lines, directing water or chemicals at fire according to direction and need. Returns fire equipment to trucks in correct order noting any damage or need for replacement.
Performs rescue work at the scene of fires or other emergencies, such as extricating trapped persons, providing first aid, administering oxygen and CPR.
As directed, protects properties against water and smoke damage as much as possible.
Assists in such readiness procedures as cleaning, hanging and loading of fire hose, preparing masks, inspection and loading fans and nozzles, cleaning tools and preparing other small items of firefighting equipment for further use.
Participates in recurring training in the use of apparatus, tools, first aid equipment, and in rescue procedures, practice drills and firefighting.
Performs related work as requested.

Minimum Requirements
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent, State of Michigan Firefighter Training Council Firefighter Levels I and II certification, Incident Command Training, Operations Level Hazardous Materials Certification, and current American Heart CPR certification, are required.
A State of Michigan Medical First Responder license must be completed within 8 months of hire to remain employed. Preference will be given to those candidates with a current State of Michigan Basic Emergency Medical Technician license and possess a minimum of one-year structural firefighting experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Ability To:
Effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with team members, colleagues and the public regarding any aspect within the scope of responsibility; and to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public and other employees and effectively understand, follow, and give oral and written instructions. Use proven problem-solving techniques to resolve issues and conflict.
Additional Requirements:
Continued maintenance of all required certifications, licenses and training is required for the duration of employment.
Must pass the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or within the previous twelve-month period have passed the CPAT or an equivalent physical agility test.
Must possess a valid Michigan Operator's License and a safe driving record.
Candidates with less than the minimum qualifications may be considered for the position. However, completion of all required training within one testing cycle is required to remain employed.
Residency Requirement:
Employees shall reside no further than the boundaries created by the perimeter roads of:
- To the North: Rosebush
- To the South: Pleasant Valley
- To the East: Loomis
- To the West: Winn
A new hire will be given 6 months to move within these boundaries.
All employees must maintain their primary residency within the perimeter restrictions listed as a condition of employment and for the full duration of their employment with the City of Mt. Pleasant. Primary residency may be on either side of the physical roads listed above.

Must possess the ability to drive self to training sessions and fire scenes; analyze reason, supervise, evaluate, organize and handle the mental and physical stress associated with fire scenes.
While performing the duties, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee may occasionally be exposed to risk of electrical shock, explosives, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Paid On-Call Firefighters are compensated on a bi-weekly basis; annual rates are divided by 26 pay periods. The base rate of pay is $150.00 per pay period, provided the employee meets the 30% run response rate as specified in the Paid On-Call Agreement. The per run response rate is $40.00 per run plus $20.00 per hour over two hours. Skill-based pay is available for Fire Officer Certifications up to $382.20 per year, additional bonus dollars up to $10,000 per year are available based on run response rate, and $20.00 per hour for departmental training and various other non-emergency events is available. We also offer 10% employer match in our deferred compensation plan and an education benefit for degree completion at a college or university level. The opportunity for prolonged assignments, re-certification training or additional fire courses are available, as assigned or approved by the Fire Chief.
