The Structure and Weld Application Engineering Intern position is a product design and development engineering internship role within the Advanced Structure & Survivability Group. The charter of the Advanced Structure & Survivability Group is the design, development, verification, and implementation of components related to Hull Structure, Integral and Applique Armor, Crew Hatches and Access Panels, including accompanying mechanisms, and Covers and Guards. This functional engineering team supports the entire portfolio of products and programs within GDLS ranging from new technology demonstration to pre-production development and ultimately full scale vehicle production.
As a member of this functional engineering team, the Structure and Weld Application Engineering Intern will, under the supervision of a mentor, be assigned a project that will support the design and development of detail hardware and/or welded assemblies associated with Hull or Turret Structures or peripheral mechanical hardware including Hatches, Access Panels, and Covers & Guards across all vehicle platforms. Achieving this function will involve some of the following activities:
Operating within cross-functional teams supporting program deliverables related to technical requirements, cost and schedule
Developing detail hardware concepts using CAD modeling tools and ensuring developed concepts meet all technical requirements
Collaborating with engineering peers within the project team to ensure developed concepts support a balanced system level approach that achieves the necessary performance requirements
Collaborating with drafting personnel in maturing design concepts to a production-ready state
Oversee the release of hardware models and prints
Provide support to the manufacturing organization in the fabrication and integration of developed hardware onto prototype and/or production platforms
Provide support, as required, for testing and verification of developed hardware
Provide support for Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) analysis to resolve identified technical issues with prototype and/or production hardware
Provide technical expertise to the structure development activity regarding weld joint design, weld integrity, and assessment of compliance to specified weld standards
Support the Advanced Structures team as a subject matter expert for weld technology, weld requirements, and structural welding applications
The Structure & Weld Application Engineering Intern role is a summer engineering internship position. Successful candidates will meet the following qualifications:
Enrolled in either an undergraduate or graduate program for Material or Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in weld technology
Familiarity with basic welding techniques and their influence on structural hardware design is desired
