In the United States, there are significant racial disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality among Black and Latinx birthing persons. Evidence suggests that, in addition to standard nursing care, continuous one-to-one emotional support provided by personnel such as Doulas is associated with improved outcomes for women in labor. Randomized trials have shown that this support can lead to shortened labor, decreased need for analgesia, fewer operative deliveries, and higher levels of satisfaction with the labor experience.
Our mission is to advance the health and well-being of women, reduce maternal mortality rates among all women, and eliminate racial disparities in health outcomes. To achieve this, evidence-based literature supports the use of Doulas and Community Health Workers (CHWs) to guide new and expecting mothers through a comprehensive network of social, emotional, and clinical supports.
