THE POSITION: Under direct supervision during an assigned twenty-four hour shift, an employee in this class performs general firefighting duties in the protection and preservation of lives and property, and responds to a large volume of medical assistance calls. All firefighters are subject to call-in for emergency service when fires or other disasters occur during their off-duty hours. This is the entrance class in the City of Midland fire service. New employees receive proper training before assignment to a regular shift.
WORKING HOURS: The Fire Department work week averages 56 hours. Employees of the department work on a platoon system of 24 hours on and 24 hours off with four consecutive days off after every third working day.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: Operates firefighting equipment in connection with extinguishing fires and saving lives; responds to emergency calls and operates medical equipment in administering aid to ill and injured persons; assists keeping equipment/apparatus in clean working condition and ready for use at all times; participates in drills and other required training programs; participates in the department's fire prevention program; assists in keeping the station and living quarters in a clean and orderly condition; and assists in making fire inspections of business, industrial and residential buildings when required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience and Training: Graduation from high school or the General Educational Development Tests (GED) equivalent. Must possess and attach copies of a Fire Fighter II Certificate; Hazardous Materials Operations Certificate both from the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council and an Emergency Medical Technician License from the Michigan Department of Community Health with application. If from out of state: Contact the Human Resources Department regarding meeting the certification requirements through MI-LARA reciprocity process.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Good moral character; mechanical aptitude; ability to perform all required physical duties of a firefighter including strength and agility standards; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; emotional stability; and ability to deal firmly and courteously with the public. Hazmat Technician Preferred – required within two years from date of hire.
Additional Requirements: Must be 18 years of age at the announced closing date for filing applications. Must possess a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator’s license with a good driving record. Must pass a background and psychological exam, including a satisfactory criminal background search and drug screen. Residency within a fifty mile radius of the City of Midland is required to adequately respond to emergency call-ins; said residency to be established no later than six months after completion of probationary period.

Entrance Agility Test: A physical agility test will be given to the top-selected candidates. The Schoolcraft College Candidate Physical Ability Test is a pre-employment physical test based upon tasks that a firefighter would need to perform at a fire scene. APPOINTMENT: Appointment is made by the Fire Chief after completing a department interview, physical examination, background check and psychological assessment. An appointed employee must serve a one-year probationary period before his/her appointment is complete.
