TITLE: Accountant
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Finance Director, this role involves maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing financial insight and support to various County departments. This role will be dedicated mostly to the Road Department and offers a diverse and engaging work environment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Manage general and subsidiary ledgers, applying principles of municipal accounting and GAAP.
- Prepare journal entries, perform reconciliations, and ensure proper fund/account posting per GASB and Michigan state guidelines.
- Serve as a key resource for department heads and Township personnel regarding budgets, expenditures, and transactional details.
- Support payroll processing as a backup, ensuring accuracy and deadlines are met.
- Oversee accounts payable for the Road Department, assisting with troubleshooting and ensuring proper documentation.
- Audit and maintain general ledger accuracy throughout the fiscal year and during year-end closing.
- Reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts.
- Coordinate and support external audits, prepare documentation and address auditor inquiries.
- Compile financial data for grant proposals and township engineering/construction projects.
- Process cash receipts and transfer vouchers.
- Assist with inventory management and other finance-related tasks as needed.
- Stay current by attending relevant workshops and seminars.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Solid understanding of accounting principles and municipal finance practices.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities with a proactive mindset.
- Effective communicator with a professional demeanor, comfortable presenting to senior leadership.
- Skilled in record-keeping, data analysis, and financial report preparation.
- Able to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Capable of working independently and as part of diverse teams in a dynamic environment.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred. Equivalent experience in governmental and road department accounting may substitute.
- Minimum three years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a municipal or road agency setting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Precision Road Department and BS&A software is highly desirable.
- Strong interpersonal skills and team collaboration abilities.
- Willingness to attend off-site trainings and meetings.
