Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Health Unit Coordinator certification preferred
- One month on-the-job experience required in order to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of policies, procedures and schedules and to gain the necessary familiarity with basic medical terminology.
Summary
Performs the full range of receptionist/clerical support to assigned nursing units including but not limited to:
- Transcribes physician's orders to unit records with close review by immediate nursing supervisor and notifies nursing personnel of orders requiring immediate attention.
- Complete appropriate requisition forms and contact other departments to schedule diagnostic tests, meals, therapies, and so forth consistent with physician's orders.
- Assemble medical records for patients/residents admitted to unit and maintain current records by timely filing physician orders and test results, replenishing forms, etc.
- Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
- Disassemble and route medical record to appropriate departments on discharge, transfer, expiration, or as requested.
- Greet and direct patients/residents and visitors to unit and orients patients/residents to assigned rooms.
- Answers telephone calls and relays messages. Respond to residents/patients' intercom calls and notifies appropriate personnel of residents/patients' requests.
- Contacts physicians directly or through the facility's paging systems as requested by authorized personnel. Notifies physician of resident/patient room numbers, consult orders, etc.
- Contacts various facility departments in order to change schedules, arrange for transportation, cleaning or repairs, meals, supplies, etc.
- Perform related clerical duties such as filing, faxing, photocopying, running errands, typing, completing charge slips, ordering stock supplies/maintaining adequate stock of documentation forms, keeping charts filled with address graphed forms e.g. physician progress notes, nurses notes and other miscellaneous clerical responsibilities as required by nursing personnel.

- Contact EAP Representatives, third party payers etc. as directed by immediate nursing supervisor.
- Compile patient data and prepare monthly statistical reports.
- Collect data for inquiry sheets and route to charge nurse for follow-up.
- For Pathways, input BASAARA information into computer.
