JOB TITLE: Driver/Laborer GS-2 AFFILIATION: TPOAM
REPORTS TO: Varies depending upon division assignment
SUMMARY
Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks involved in construction, maintenance and repair of various City properties and structures. Work assignments also require the operation of motorized equipment, vehicles and trucks. Employees in this classification typically work as part of a crew under immediate or relatively close supervision. Employees are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all mechanical and motorized equipment and vehicles. Employees within this classification may be any division within the Department of Public Services.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Works and Parks and Recreation Divisions:
- Drives a truck or other vehicle to transport personnel and equipment to the job site.*
- Works on patch crews assigned to repair holes in City streets.*
- Loads and operates salt trucks and snow plows.*
- Trims trees within City right of way areas or park properties.*
- Operates front-end loaders to load dump trucks with dirt, salt, wood and other materials.*
- Works as part of a “vactor crew" assigned to either clean sewers or pick up leaves and debris.*
- Operates and drives dump trucks to transport or dispose of materials.*
DRIVER/LABORER
- Performs various lawn maintenance or grounds keeping tasks such as helping mowers pick up debris, and pulling and trimming weeds with manual or power equipment.*
- Installs and/or maintains signs and other structures.*
WATER DIVISION:
- Operates equipment such as pumps, air compressors, jack hammers, sewer rodding machine and other heavy equipment.*
- Maintains and repairs water mains.*
- Maintains, repairs and cleans sewers and manholes.*
- Maintains and repairs water main valves and gates.*
- Maintains, repairs, rebuilds and replaces fire hydrants and valve boxes.*
- Works as part of sewer jet/vactor crew.*
- Operates front-end loader in moving dirt, sand, slag and blacktop.*
- Performs daily service checks on equipment and cleans vehicles.*

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: An education level of at least 12th grade would be expected to provide the knowledge and skills required to perform this job. Incumbents must be able to read and write, and follow written and oral instructions.
Experience: Up to six months of on-the-job training and work experience is required for an individual to meet the performance requirements associated with the job.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of trucks, tractors, front-end loaders and related motorized equipment is desirable.

CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE
A valid Michigan driver's license with required CDL B with Air Brakes and Tanker Endorsement is required.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Incumbents are exposed to moderately, and sometimes extremely, disagreeable working conditions during the course of daily work assignments, e.g., dust, dirt, fumes, and heat and cold due to outside weather conditions.
The job frequently requires heavy physical exertion to lift and move large and heavy objects and equipment.
Incumbents are exposed to potential injury or contamination in the job due to the condition of various work sites, the operation of various vehicles and maintenance equipment, and contact with chemicals or contaminated substances.
Incumbents may be required to work extended shifts in response to emergency situations.
