The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), the Department of Curriculum Support, and The Program on Intergroup Relations at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 33.33% effort for the Fall Term 2025 to teach one IGR course, ALA 471. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025 and end on December 31, 2025.
Duties of this LEO Lec 1 position are expected to include teaching, developing some course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a LEO Lec 1 in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester. This position will be responsible for teaching 1 IGR course which will be ALA 471 housed in The Program on Intergroup Relations.
Specific responsibilities for this course include:
- Participate in the entirety of ALA 471/472 training Fri. Aug. 22, 2025 and Sat. Aug. 23, 2025, both days from 9:00-5:00 pm, leading some of the activities.
- Participate in all ALA 471/472 classes on Mondays 2:00-4:00 pm, including leading some of the activities, and setting up before and cleaning up after class.
- Observe ALA 171 peer facilitators facilitating their section in weeks 2 and 3 of class, that is between Sept. 1 and 11, 2025, including on evenings.
- Provide feedback concerning their six facilitation skills to observed ALA 171 peer facilitators in 30-minute in-person meetings at times that fit their student schedules.
- Participate in in-person weekly ALA 171/471 Coordinating Team meetings at a time to be determined that fits the schedules of the Student Lead Coordinator and Curriculum and Outreach Coordinations.
- May conduct some one-on-one meetings with ALA 171 peer facilitators during weeks 1 and 2 and again approximately Nov. 4-11, 2025 for professional development coaching.
- A terminal degree in Psychology, Education, Sociology, Social Work or in a closely related field.
- The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years experience with teaching and co-teaching courses related to intergroup relations theory and dialogue pedagogy as well as working with a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse populations.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated deep understanding of transition from high school to tertiary education and of transition between institutions by transfer students.
- Must be available to teach on Mondays, 2-4 pm; Must have some evening hours for observation of facilitation skills for ALA 171 sections. Must meet 1:1 with student facilitators.
- Highly familiar with UM campus resources, especially counseling services, for undergraduate students
The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
- Ph.D or Ed.D
- Demonstrated success cultivating non-hierarchical, inclusive communities that foster a students' sense of belonging;
- Demonstrated success co-facilitating a dialogic classroom environment;
- Demonstrated commitment to a pedagogy of care, anti-racist pedagogy, inclusive teaching methods, and/or trauma-informed teaching.
- Previous classroom teaching of UM first year undergraduates and transfer students
- Experience with UM student athletes, Comprehensive Studies Program and first generation students
- Skilled in active listening, generative listening, and global listening
- The successful candidate is likely to have experience in engaged pedagogy, social justice education, and experiential teaching.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
