Position Summary:
- Under the supervision of the Language Revitalization Program Manager, learn to teach and assist in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, bus and off site during field trips. The classroom will function as a regular toddler program but will only use Anishinaabemowin in the process. All ALRD staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.
- The original spoken language of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian community is in a critical state of loss. If action is not taken immediately the language that was spoken for hundreds of years will be lost forever.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilize Anishinaabemowin (speaking our language) and assist students in their daily classroom, cafeteria, playground, bus and field trip activities.
- Assist students on the bus by assisting them on and off, ensuring they are properly buckled in car seats, addressing their needs, and monitoring student behavior. Monitor students while arriving and departing school buildings speaking Anishinaabe.
- Maintain a safe learning environment for all children and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, well-organized classroom environment; maintain classroom documents, records and attendance.
- Assist students in personal care such as eating, resting, exercising and toileting.
- Assist in supervising fieldtrips, after school programs, and other school related activities in creating learning materials when necessary with a focus on language acquisition.
- Participate in in-service training.
- Ensure the cleanliness and safety of materials, classroom and playgrounds by performing routine inspections.
- Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts/Purpose of Contacts:
- Contact is with students, department employees and supervisor.
- Contact with other school staff members, Language Revitalization Director, officials, parents, students and general public with the purpose to obtain, clarify or give facts concerning students, language acquisition or school activities as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Excellent communication and group leadership skills.
- Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Associates Degree.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
License, Certification, or Special Requirements:
- Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
- Knowledge of the history, culture, and cultural needs of Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
- Knowledge of early childhood development, diet and nutrition guidelines.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
- Skill in interacting and engaging children.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
- Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the community.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
- Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally sit, bend, climb and balance.
- Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Normal office environment and classroom.
- Expose to unpleasant odors, hazardous material and infectious disease.
- Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
- Travel may be required.
